CL Dimple Key Lock

CL Dimple Key Lock

CL make a range of cam locks, desk draw locks, filing cabinet locks and many other utility locks which are available from locksmiths in Brisbane. The CL range of locks represents a broad number of the most common utility locks for use in Australian homes and businesses. If you need a lock for a letterbox, desk drawer or shop display cabinet the CL locks can more then often provide the right lock for the job.

CL Lock barrel being inserted into housing Brisbane locksmithCL locks are designed for and sold by your locksmith. As a specialty locksmith product they come in a disassembled form. The lock bodies come separate from the cylinders. With the cylinders sold separately it is easy to change the cylinders to suit our customers needs. If a customer wants multiple locks on the same key, the cylinders can all be keyed alike and then inserted into the lock housing. If groups of keyed alike locks are needed, the cylinders can be adjusted or keyed into groups then inserted into the lock housings.

CL Lock desk drawer lock Brisbane locksmithAs the lock cylinders are sold separately to the the lock housings, CL has introduced a range of higher security dimple key cylinders. The dimple key cylinder mechanism works a little different to regular flat keys. The dimple key has holes or dimples drilled into the flat sides of the keys. The different depths and spacing of the dimple corresponds to the combination of the lock.

CL Lock filing cabinet lock locksmith BrisbaneThe dimple key cylinders make lock picking a lot more difficult. There is a lot less room in the lock cylinder to insert and manipulate the lock tumblers. This higher difficulty in lock picking gives the dimple lock cylinder an edge over the standard wafer lock. For many situations such as letter box locks where the standard locks can be easily picked or even a master key used, a dimple key letterbox lock offers a much greater degree of security.

CL Lock Keys Brisbane locksmithThe dimple key lock cylinders have a unique design where a notch in each disc pushes into the dimple of the key. The lock cylinder contains 6 spring loaded discs which must all precisely line up when the key is inserted to allow the lock to turn. Each disc can have 4 different depths which correspond to 4 different dimple sizes in the key. Only the correct key with the right combination of dimples will allow the lock to open.

The dimple keys are much shorter then a regular house key. They are made from nickel plated brass and have a stylish black plastic head. The keys are stamped with a code number that is used when keyed alike locks are required. The keys could be cut to code although at this time we are unable to make an original key from the code number stamped on the key.

The CL range of cam locks and drawer locks is very well priced and the dimple key range of cylinders is the cheapest non standard higher security utility locks we sell. By far the largest demand for these cheap dimple locks is for letter boxes. The dimple lock range of CL cam locks would make any criminal stealing mail think twice.

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus is a very well known brand worldwide. It is known for its padlocks, bike locks and security related products. So how does the Abus double cylinder deadbolt hold up for security and quality?

Well you would expect the Abus double cylinder deadlock to be made in Germany. This lock however is made in Taiwan. The packaging and look of the lock do not look to be very different from many other Taiwanese made deadlocks on the market.

locksmith Brisbane deadbolt AbusThe finish on the Abus deadlock is very good. It has a bright chrome finish with an embossed Abus logo on the outside cylinder. Even the locking bolt has a bright chrome finish.

The locking bolt is adjustable to 60mm or 70mm. Adjusting is simpley done by twisting the front and back parts of the bolt assembly when the bolt is in the thrown position. The actual locking bolt also is made from solid steel with an insert in the centre to resist sawing attacks. The steel bolt is a bit of a surprise as most other similar deadbolts use a brass locking bolt.

The solid bolt is longer then the thrown portion of the bolt, leaving 10mm inside the bolt assembly. This gives the bolt extra strength from prying attacks then most other deadlocks of this type.

The lock body has two cylinders with pressed metal housing and a spacer ring behind each housing. The spacer ring can be removed for thick door types making the lock suitable for locks between 35mm – 45mm.

The lock cylinder of the Abus deadbolt mounts into a metal housing and is removable. It can be replaced with a high security cylinder. The lock cylinder can also be replaced with a registered key barrel if required.

The lock cylinder and barrel are a 6 pin design although out of the box a 5 pin key is used. The code on the key matches the cuts of the key.

The Abus deadbolt has no resistance to lock bumping or lock picking. The pins used in the lock are standard and no security pins are used.

Adding a registered security barrel or replacing the barrel altogether can make this lock a lot more secure. High security lock pins can also be added to increase security and stop lock bumping attacks or lock picking.

The lock has no hardened inserts to stop drilling attacks. Hardened pins in the lock barrel assembly and behind the mounting screws would have made this lock much harder to drill off the door.

Fitting the lock to a wooden door is fairly straight forward. It has the same standard tubular deadlock holes for fitting as most other deadbolts. This makes it easy to replace an existing deadbolt.

The Abus double cylinder deadbolt is a well made lock. It has a very smooth operation and should last for many years once fitted.

Abus give it a security rating of 7, which seems quite high for a lock with no pick protection, no bump key protection and no drilling defence. While high security barrels will increase the security of the lock when fitted to a door, out of the packet the lock is not a high security lock.

Locked out in Brisbane

Locked out in Brisbane

It has been a busy Friday night in Brisbane. Tonight we have performed lockouts in Chermside, Upper Mount Gravatt, St Lucia and Kangaroo Point.  We were able to unlock all the doors tonight without any problems.  The number of people locked out side of their homes increases quite a bit this time of year as the weather heats up and it gets closer to Christmas.

Locked out in Brisbane. Need a locksmith to unlock a doorUnlocking the door at Upper Mount Gravatt tonight was an interesting job. We were not the first locksmith to attend the property. The first locksmith called could not unlock the door. The tried for over an hour and could not pick the lock. The tenant of the property informed us they used a pick gun to try to open the door. It was quickly evident that the lock they were trying to pick the pick gun would never have opened. It was a new style Lockwood 001 deadlatch. These locks use security pins that can not be picked with a pick gun or bumped with a bump key. We use a unique opening techinique to unlock a locked door with these Lockwood deadlocks. The customer was very happy to be back inside their apartment within a few minutes of our arrival.

It is normal that we can unlock a locked door within a few minutes. There are situations where it becomes very difficult to open a locked door. High security locks a challenge, which often can still be opened. The biggest challenges when opening locked doors are caused by lock malfunctions, broken locks and very weird situations. A broken lock can make it impossible to open a door, even when a key is available. A broken lock can often be unlocked and the door opened quite fast, although some situations require patience in figuring out exactly what is wrong with the lock. A broken latch inside a door is also a situation that requires skill to open the door.

In Brisbane there is an ever increasing number of high security locks. High security locks stop a lot of burglars from breaking into homes and businesses. They do however hinder a locksmith from quickly unlocking a door. Making a locksmiths job harder is not a bad thing! The harder it is for a locksmith, the harder it also is for criminals. Opening all types of doors with all types of locks is just part of a locksmiths job. Our locksmiths have a range of door opening techniques for many situations.

If you need a door unlocked in Brisbane, call our 24 hour locksmiths any time and we will come to you as quickly as possible.

Changing locks 24 Hours

Changing locks 24 Hours

Changing Locks Brisbane Locksmith

Lock Pinning Kit

Often when we change locks on a house or business in Brisbane it is so the occupants can be sure that other people with keys to their doors can not open the locks. This is by far the better type of lock changing job we do. Getting locks changed to avoid future problems is smart and should be done when ever you move to a new house, shop or office or when ever you dont want someone to come back into your home or get through your doors.

As we are a twenty four hour locksmith, we get jobs all hours of the day and night. The night time jobs are almost always emergency locksmith jobs where people are in some type of predicament and they need help from a locksmith in Brisbane. These types of jobs often are because their keys have been stolen and there is an urgent need to secure the home or business as it is more then likely the thief will return.

Lock cylinder showing coloured pins brisbane locksmithChanging the locks is either done in two ways. Either the lock or lock cylinders will be replaced or the lock pins will be changed to a new key combination. There are reasons for doing either type of lock changing. If a lock is damaged or broken then replacing the lock or cylinder is a must. Sometimes it is even less expensive to replace the cylinder then to repin or rekey the lock. If time is of the essence, some locks are better to be replaced as they can be time consuming to disassemble.

The advantages of just replacing the pins in locks are that the lock does not have to be replaced. Some locks are no longer made and impossible to replace. If the lock is not a standard fitting then the holes in the door would need to be repaired. Some locks are also very expensive. Replacing an entire lock is often just no cost effective. Even though some locks can be replaced with cheaper versions, the cheaper locks are never as good a quality as the more expensive higher quality locks. Going cheap on security on a home or business can lead to some very bad outcomes.

Our locksmiths in Brisbane always consider the most cost effective way to change your locks. If changing the locks is too time consuming or not a viable option, then new lock cylinders can be the better option.

Locks changed Locksmith Brisbane lock shop 24 hour locksmithsIn Brisbane, rekeying the locks quite often is the better option. The major advantage is that you can have all the locks on your doors with the same key or even master keyed. Simply replacing locks will give a different key for each lock. Our Brisbane locksmiths can change the locks all to the one key to make it much simpler for you to operate your locks. There is never a need to go searching for the correct key for the lock.

With our after hours lock service we are always mindful of your costs and try our best to give you the best solution. Our locksmith vans are all equipped to change locks in the middle of the night and we carry all the parts and replacement cylinders and locks needed for Brisbane. Getting people out of a bad situation and changing their locks 24 hours if they have been burgled or keys stolen is a big part of our 24 hour locksmiths job.

Lock picked Kangaroo Point

Lock picked Kangaroo Point

door lock opened for student at Kangaroo point. Registered key system lock picked

Door unlocked. Student accommodation lock at Kangaroo Point.

Another student let back in to his room

Providing a 24 hour locksmith service in Brisbane, sometimes it is easy to forget just how essential the service is and how it helps so many people in their daily lives. Helping students to unlock their door is a fairly common type of job for us here at 24 Hour Locksmiths. In Brisbane we have a lot of international students who attend universities who from time to time find themselves in trouble with keys and locks. Often students from overseas countries are surprised that there is a 24 hour locksmith available to help them. Students we let back into their rooms and apartments are always grateful and always a pleasure to help.

Many locks on the doors at Kangaroo Point are a high security profile and contain lock pins that make the locks extremely difficult to open. Luckily this is our job, and bypassing and picking locked doors usually is not a difficult problem. Of course they are not all easy doors to pick the locks on. Some doors take a little longer to open then others but our locksmiths are trained to open even the trickiest locked doors.

This particular locked door uses a Lockwood mortice lock and it has a Registered Key system installed. The keys for this door can only be cut by the locksmith who installed the system. The lock cylinder used a paracentric key way which makes it very difficult to copy a key for the lock and also makes it very hard to insert a lock pick tool into the lock to open the door. Even though the lock was a difficult one to open, it didnt take our locksmith very long to have the door open and the student safe back in his apartment.

Kangaroo Point Unlock Door

Kangaroo Point Unlock Door

Another door opened at Kangaroo Point

Other locksmiths in Brisbane who do emergency locksmith work at Kangaroo Point would understand that it is a suburb of Brisbane that is rather special in many ways. One way that Kangaroo Point is special is that it has a lot of upmarket units. By upmarket, I mean they are generally a bit more luxurious and many are in high rise buildings. Kangaroo Point might be a great place to live because it is close to the city, but it is also easy to lock the keys inside the apartment.

It is easier to lock your keys inside your apartment at Kangaroo Point because most doors are fire doors. The fire doors need a door closer to make sure the door closes but the door closer also makes it easier for the door to close and for people to lock themselves outside of the apartment.

Kangaroo Point door with lockwood deadlatch. 24 hour locksmtihs can pick these locks and unlock the door

Because of the fire door regulations at Kangaroo Point most apartment doors have the same type of deadlock or deadlatch installed on the door. The extra lock is usually always a Lockwood 001 deadlatch. The Lockwood 001 deadlock has for quite some time now come out of the packet with a higher security lock cylinder which Lockwood Australia calls “Kinetic Defence” The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch with Kinetic Defence cylinder is very different to “pick” open, then the older Lockwood locks. It requires a very different lock picking technique and old lock picking skills need to be upgraded. The Lockwood Kinetic Defence cylinders are also very hard to open with a bump key.

Lockwood Australia did a great job in making their locks harder to open. Well, lets face it, it is a lock manufacturers job to make their locks hard to open by any other means except the key.

The problem with locking yourself out of a Lockwood 001 deadlatch at Kangaroo point is that many locksmiths in Brisbane still do not know how to open these locks without forcing or drilling the lock open. You cant blame the locksmith, these locks are hard to pick open if you haven’t put the time into learning the skills required to open them. At 24 Hour Locksmith Brisbane one of the biggest part of our job is to know how to open locked doors. Our locksmiths are trained and taught how to open Lockwood Kinetic Defence locks which are on many doors at Kangaroo Point.

There is a buzz you get each time you open a door for a customer. Weather the lock is picked open or opened by other means, it is always our aim to open locks without any damage to the door or the lock. Every time a New Lockwood 001 Kinetic Defence deadlock is opened our locksmith Kangaroo Point gives us great satisfaction to know the hard work and training given to our locksmiths is paying off and our customers are benefiting in what seems to them to be a fast and easy door opening.

Please don’t drill open my lock

Please don’t drill open my lock

What? you want to drill open my Lockwood lock?

Lockwood 001

Lockwood Deadlatch DN315

Lockwood 001 deadlatch cylinderLockwood Anti-Bump Padlock

Nearly all the domestic range of Lockwood pin tumbler locks use a specific anti-bump lock cylinder.
The lock cylinder not only makes bumping much harder but it also makes the locks harder to pick open.  Good for security, but when you lock the keys inside your home unlocking the door might be a bit harder then the average lock.

When these locks hit the market even we had troubles opening them.  They are a challenge to open if you are not very skilled in lock picking! For a small change in design Lockwood did quite a good job at making their locks much harder to open.

So the question you might be asking is why are locksmiths still drilling open these locks when the keys are locked inside or lost?
Well, you would have to ask the person who comes to open your lock armed with a drill that question.   I could guess, that they haven’t taken the time to gain the skills they require to pick open locks?

I would definitely ask if the locksmith you call to open your door can open your lock without any damage and without drilling the lock open.  It might not sound like a big deal, but it will take much longer to drill open these locks and cost you for a replacement lock.

So how can you tell which locks have anti-bump cylinders?  Currently they are in all the domestic range of Lockwood pin tumbler locks and as far as I have seen Whitco use an anti-bump cylinder configuration as well.  It is not only Lockwood and brand name locks that use anti-bump cylinders.  Many locksmiths also add anti-bump cylinders to standard looking locks to increase security as well as registered keyed locks.

Lock Bumping

Lock Bumping

lock bumping brisbane locksmith

Lock bumping a deadlock

You are probably not the only person with a key to your house or business.

Lock Bumping is a covert way to open a lock when you do not have a key. It is similar to lock picking in that it is used to open doors and all types of locks. Lock Bumping and Lock Picking are not the only way to open a lock without a key but lock Bumping is a problem for most houses and businesses as no real skill is required to open a door and some of the most well made locks can be unlocked with the bump key method.
Burglars can cut a Master Bump Key to open 95% of locks in Australia.
Bump keys were made known to the mainstream due to the information going viral on the internet. Using bump keys is so easy, people started making videos and uploading them to youtube and tutorials on how to make bump keys were available of forums and how to sites. The spread of the information over the internet led to many high profile manufacturers feeling that their locks were from the dark ages as they were way too easy to open. Even very young kids could now open their locks.

Bump proof lock. Abloy key

Abloy key for a bump proof lock

The bump key can be made from just about any old key that inserts into the lock. All you need to do is file it down the correct way or cut a key and you have made a bump key. To bump open a lock a bump hammer is used to tap the key which lines up the pins inside the lock cylinder. Many locks in Brisbane are vulnerable to bump keys including most regular deadlocks, security door locks, commercial locks, registered key systems and unit door locks.
Common locks sold in hardware stores still have no resistance to lock bumping. There are locks now available in Brisbane that can not be bumped. There are high security locks sold by locksmiths which can not be bumped and which are practically pick proof. A high level of bump resistance can be achieved if you have your locks changed to a bump proof system. High security locks are a little more expensive then regular locks and it depends on weather you are concerned with this security risk in your home or business as to weather you request bump proof locks.

Home door that might be easily bumped open

How to know if your lock has been bumped?

One of the biggest problems with lock bumping is that it leaves no visible signs of your lock being picked. There are no break and enter marks on the door and no sign of a thief entering your home or business. For insurance companies this is a problem. If there is no sign of a break-in then how do you prove it? The lock bumping phenomenon has forced many businesses and home owners to upgrade and have locks changed to a higher security lock cylinder. If you are in doubt weather your locks can be picked or bumped you should consult a qualified locksmith for more information.
