Secure6 Restricted keys

Secure6 Restricted keys

Secure6 is a restricted keying system designed and available to locksmiths in Australia and New Zealand.

The design of the key is protected against illegal duplication until 2024. This gives peace of mind that your keys can not be duplicated by a key cutter or locksmith. Only the locksmith authorised to cut extra keys for the restricted system will duplicate the keys. The keys will only be duplicated once the identification of the system owner or authorised person is confirmed.

This makes handing a key to a tenant, contractor, real estate agent, friend or any other person a lot safer. Locks do not have to be changed as you can be confident the keys were not duplicated by a key cutter.

There are a wide variety of lock barrels available for the Secure6 restricted key system. The lock barrels are made in Australia to suit our specific needs. Barrels are made for Lockwood locks, Abus, Schlage, Whitco, and many more brands of locks. With so many lock barrels available there is no limit to where you can use the secure 6 restricted key system.

House doors, Commercial doors, glass doors, padlocks, security screen doors, Euro locks, deadlocks, block locks, lockable bolts, utility locks, garage locks, car park entry, gates, foyer entry, fire doors, apartment doors, electronic switch locks, etc can all be placed on a secure6 restricted key system.

A Secure6 key can work in many different locks

You can easily make just one key work in all secure6 locks. Even locks of different brands will now be able to open on the same secure6 key. As the lock barrels are replaced to all the same profile there will be no limits to the keying possibilities. Locks can be master keyed for a large commercial building or hotel with levels of access to suit your building.

Side warding of key

The secure6 keys are made from hard nickel silver. Nickel silver is strong and hard wearing. The series6 keys will not break like brass or steel keys can. In heavy use areas the keys will not wear down and will maintain their accuracy for years to come. The keys are made by Silca in Italy and are milled very precisely to ensure quality of the lock system.

The lock barrels are each made to exact specifications and to very tight tolerances. The lock barrels can have hardened inserts installed to prevent drilling the barrels out. The unique profile of the key and warding inside the lock barrel insure no other key will fit into this lock.

When a secure6 system is installed, it is often possible to use the existing locks in a building and just change the lock barrel. The lock barrels are designed to match up with the most common locks in Brisbane. This can save a lot of money in the installation of a restricted key system as only a new lock barrel is required.

The keys can have a colourful plastic insert in the head of the key. This is for easy identification of a certain key. Certain levels of master keys can each have their own colour, or you can have a colour for each person with a key. The head of the secure6 key is larger then most standard keys. The larger head makes it much easier to operate the secure6 locks.

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus is a very well known brand worldwide. It is known for its padlocks, bike locks and security related products. So how does the Abus double cylinder deadbolt hold up for security and quality?

Well you would expect the Abus double cylinder deadlock to be made in Germany. This lock however is made in Taiwan. The packaging and look of the lock do not look to be very different from many other Taiwanese made deadlocks on the market.

locksmith Brisbane deadbolt AbusThe finish on the Abus deadlock is very good. It has a bright chrome finish with an embossed Abus logo on the outside cylinder. Even the locking bolt has a bright chrome finish.

The locking bolt is adjustable to 60mm or 70mm. Adjusting is simpley done by twisting the front and back parts of the bolt assembly when the bolt is in the thrown position. The actual locking bolt also is made from solid steel with an insert in the centre to resist sawing attacks. The steel bolt is a bit of a surprise as most other similar deadbolts use a brass locking bolt.

The solid bolt is longer then the thrown portion of the bolt, leaving 10mm inside the bolt assembly. This gives the bolt extra strength from prying attacks then most other deadlocks of this type.

The lock body has two cylinders with pressed metal housing and a spacer ring behind each housing. The spacer ring can be removed for thick door types making the lock suitable for locks between 35mm – 45mm.

The lock cylinder of the Abus deadbolt mounts into a metal housing and is removable. It can be replaced with a high security cylinder. The lock cylinder can also be replaced with a registered key barrel if required.

The lock cylinder and barrel are a 6 pin design although out of the box a 5 pin key is used. The code on the key matches the cuts of the key.

The Abus deadbolt has no resistance to lock bumping or lock picking. The pins used in the lock are standard and no security pins are used.

Adding a registered security barrel or replacing the barrel altogether can make this lock a lot more secure. High security lock pins can also be added to increase security and stop lock bumping attacks or lock picking.

The lock has no hardened inserts to stop drilling attacks. Hardened pins in the lock barrel assembly and behind the mounting screws would have made this lock much harder to drill off the door.

Fitting the lock to a wooden door is fairly straight forward. It has the same standard tubular deadlock holes for fitting as most other deadbolts. This makes it easy to replace an existing deadbolt.

The Abus double cylinder deadbolt is a well made lock. It has a very smooth operation and should last for many years once fitted.

Abus give it a security rating of 7, which seems quite high for a lock with no pick protection, no bump key protection and no drilling defence. While high security barrels will increase the security of the lock when fitted to a door, out of the packet the lock is not a high security lock.

Milner Safe Lock

Milner Safe Lock

Milner safe lock 3D printed replica

A milner safe is very easy to identify just by looking at the key hole. The distinctive 2 keyhole slots will give away the type of lock used in the safe every time. Milner were very popular safes for very good reason. They offered a high level of pick resistance and resistance from brute force attacks.

Usually the ingenuity of these old safe locks is only seen by locksmiths who service these safes and cut keys for them. Being able to replicate the lock easily on a 3D printer gives people a chance to see just how these locks work and allows them to build their own high security safe lock.

This Milner replica safe lock has a few changes from the original. The biggest noticeable difference is that the lock does not have a curtain. The curtain is an internal piece of the safe lock that serves 2 main purposes. It acts as the bolt throw and it shields the levers and inner working of the lock to make lock picking much harder. The curtain could not be 3d printed strong enough to make it work in this model. Instead the bolt throw uses the end cut of the key.

The key is made much larger simply to add strength. A thin plastic key just isnt strong enough to work.
Interestingly, the original Milner keys were made from cast brass. A cast brass key is very strong! Modern steel keys have the flag welded onto the post. The weld in modern keys is a weak point and often causes keys to break inside a safe. If you can find a locksmith who has cast brass keys, they are a much better alternative for these safes.

The body of the lock is made in three sections. The bolt is inserted from the bottom of the lock and the levers are inserted from the top. A top and bottom plate hold the lock together.

As a locksmith in Brisbane I still see a lot of these old Milner safes still in operation. While they might not have the same resistance to modern attacks as more modern high security safes, picking the lock on a Milner safe is still a very hard endeavour which takes a lot of skill. Most Brisbane locksmiths would not even consider picking a Milner safe lock.

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch for metal frame doors

The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch is a well known lock in Brisbane. It has been a good choice for houses in Brisbane for over 20 years. The wooden frame version comes with a door frame strengthener that reinforces the the door frame and gives greater holding force which makes it much harder to kick the door in when this lock is installed properly.

The metal frame version of the Lockwood 001 is identical to the wooden frame version. Except the metal frame 001 comes with a metal frame strike.

Metal Frame Strike Lockwood 001 deadlatchThe metal frame strike comes in two pieces. It is in some ways similar to the wooden frame version in that the inside frame of the metal frame strike is where the holding force is obtained. The outer housing of the metal frame strike is attached by two screws to the inside frame.

The inside frame of the strike is screwed to the metal frame with metal thread screws. Holes are drilled and tapped into the metal frame of the door. It is these screws which provide the entire holding force for the strike. If the door was to be forced or kicked, it is these screws tapped into the metal frame which hold the strike secure.

Metal Frame Strike insert for Lockwood 001 deadlatchSince the screw holes of the metal frame strike are so crucial to the security of the lock, they are one of the most important installation steps. An incorrectly drilled and tapped screw can compromise the metal frame strikes’ ability to stop an intruder. Of course I would only recommend using a trade qualified locksmith to have this lock installed. In fact it is against the law in most situations to use a handyman or non locksmith to install this type of lock.

The Lockwood 001 fits to most apartment doors the same way it does to a standard wooden door. There are however a large number of requirements for apartment or unit fire doors that have to be considered when installing a Lockwood 001 deadlatch in this situation. Fire doors internally are very different to wooden doors.

The Lockwood 001 is able to be deadlocked from the inside. The way this works is that the inside knob is locked with the key. Once locked from the inside it can not be opened without the key from either side. A red or green indicator on the inside of the the knob can alert you to the inside deadlatch being activated.

Once the key is turned and the inside knob is locked, the door can be pulled closed. If someone were to break in to your apartment through a window, the door would not be able to be opened without the key.

lockwood-001-cylinderOn returning home and opening the 001 from the outside, the inside deadlatching will automatically kick off. So the inside knob will be free to turn so you can exit the door. This is to help prevent you from being locked inside your apartment.

The Lockwood 001 uses a standard Lockwood key. The lock can be clanged to suit other keys in your apartment. It can also have lock cylinders or barrels replaced to suit most high security locking systems.

lockwood-001-keyThe standard cylinders use Lockwood’s Kinetic Defence pin and cylinder design. This does make the key feel rough to insert. This is especially noticeable when the key is inserted into the inside locking knob cylinder as it is spring loaded. The rough feel of the key being inserted is a trade off for added security to protect against lock bumping and lock picking. We have to give Lockwood credit for trying to make their locks more secure from simple opening techniques, so a lock that does not feel smooth is a small price to pay.

As the Lockwood 001 metal frame strike is one of the only deadlatches that can be fitted to most apartment doors there is not much to compare it to. This is a lock that has been tested by time and has performed very well protecting our homes. It is a good choice for your Brisbane apartment or unit door. Always use a qualified locksmith when installing this lock. There are quite a few laws and regulations that do need to be followed regarding its installation.

Whitco Tasman Security lock

Whitco Tasman Security lock

Whitco Tasman Mk2 Security Door Lock

The Whitco Tasman Mk2 security door lock is one of the most common locks used on security screen doors in Brisbane.   It is designed to withstand a lot of high frequency use and last over 10 years.   The Mk2 Tasman is available with different functions and not all Mk2 Tasman variations will suit every security screen door.

DIY Security Screen lock Replacement

If you have a security screen door lock that has lost its spring, has saggy handles or just broken then you will want to replace it.  Before you go to the hardware shop buy a replacement lock there are a few things you really need to know.
Whitco Tasman security door lock in Brisbane fitted to door new or repair
Number one.
Security screen door locks come in 2 basic types. Locks for sliding doors and locks for swinging doors. Make sure you buy the correct one.

Number two.
Try to match up brands. The 3 most popular brands in Australia are Whitco, Doric and Lockwood. Matching the same brand of lock will make your life much easier when it comes to installation.

Number three.
Try to match the model. If your lock is a Whitco MK2, try to replace it with a Whitco MK2. A Whitco MK1 will not work on most doors that have a MK2 lock installed and vise versa.

Number four.
Even though you have the same model lock… Look harder… Even the same model locks can be different. The same model lock can have different functions that are not suited to your door.

Number five.
Most hardware shops do not sell security screen locks for triple lock doors. If you have a Crimsafe door or other well made screen it probably locks in three places on the door. The hardware shop locks might have the same name and model but they do not work.

Number six.
If you do not have a key for the lock to remove the cylinder, consider calling a locksmith to replace the lock.  It can save a lot of time and headaches as the lock will not be able to be removed from the door.

If you need help with the replacement of repair of a security door lock, our Brisbane locksmiths are always available.  We have a 24 hour emergency locksmith service which will come to your home or business whenever you are stuck.  Call us anytime for security screen door lock problems.

DN8527 Entrance Lock Set

DN8527 Entrance Lock Set

Unfortunately, not all entrance lock sets are made equal.   They may look the same.  They might work the same way, They might even have the same looking key.  But there are big differences between many plain old looking door lock sets.

Locksmith Entrance Door Lock

Well the lock I would like to focus on is one of our best selling products.   This Entrance lock set is one that our locksmiths in Brisbane are proud to fit because it is a tremendously high quality lock for the price.   This entrance lock is a commercial grade lock set and is manufactured from Satin Stainless Steel which gives it the most durable finish available.

The latch on these locks is also a heavy duty deadlatching type of latch.  When fitted correctly the deadlatching mechanism resists attacks from through the door opening techniques where manipulation of the latch might be possible as with some other types of locks.
The latch is available in either a 60 or 70 mm backset.  From the edge of the door to the centre of the lock.  It is also easy to make the latch work on a 127mm door or even other non standard backset measurements.

The body of the lock is made of heavy duty steel and designed to be much more robust then other less quality locks.  The lock has a 2 hour fire rating which most other locks do not have.  This means it is suitable for many Unit doors which have a 2 hour fire rated door.

The locking cylinder on this lock is one that is loved by our locksmiths in Brisbane.  It is an easy to change 6 pin cylinder that is interchangeable with a large range of high security cylinders and is machined very precisely for years of operational use.  The cylinder can be changed to match most other locks in your home or office.  The cylinder is a 6 pin tumbler mechanism for much higher security.

This is a lock we get very few problems with.  Usually if there is a problem with one of these locks, it is because the door has issues such as loose hinges, etc.  It is a very high quality product that is recommended by our locksmiths for many different situations.

Letterbox Lock for Security

Letterbox Lock for Security

Letterbox lock – How secure is yours?

combination letterbox lock

Have you ever thought about how secure your mail is?  Well there is a marked increase in the theft from mail boxes lately.  It mostly has to do with identity theft, although there are valuable items posted in the mail every day.  They might not be valuable in dollar terms, but there are many things that are very hard to replace or even irreplaceable that are often posted.  A good letterbox lock might be just the thing you need to put a stop to the theft of your mail.

Identity theft is the stealing of your identity for the purpose of making a financial gain.  When someone can identify themselves as you they can have access to a wide range of activities that will allow them to make a gain at your expense.  This of course will not be good for you.  Even though many times any transactions the thief makes can be reversed, the time and energy you have to make to have these transactions reversed is great.   A thief with just a few of your details can cause a lot of harm.  They might be after your full name, date of birth, address, credit card numbers, account numbers and much more.  Of ten these are things a thief can get from your mail.  Through the stealing of confidential mail it is easy to get information that can aid them in creating a fake profile of you. a Good Letterbox lock may help to stop your information from being stolen

Most standard letterbox locks are far too simple to open without the proper key.  They can be picked open with little knowledge of locks and usually this takes very little time.  In just a few seconds your letterbox might be able to be opened and the mail taken.  Some types of locks used on letterboxes also have a master key.  This key is used to open a whole range of locks.  Imagine how easy it would be to open a whole bank of letter box locks on an apartment building.

There are a range of letterbox locks that are more secure then the standard locks supplied with most letterboxes.  There are some that you can use your own padlock to secure the box, some with a combination letterbox lock built into the lock and some that take a high security key that cant easily be picked open and that cant be opened with a master key.

Keyless Door Locks

Keyless Door Locks

Carbine Keyless Door Locks

Digital Lock Carbine and Lockwood Keyless Door Locks

Keyless door locks digital

These are some great new keyless door locks that are now available.  They are a less expensive way to have keyless entry on your house or unit door.   They are stylish and come in a standard satin chrome finish to match existing satin chrome door furniture.

These locks are fire rated!  Yes they have a 2 hour fire rating, so they can be used in a whole range of applications where a fire rated door lock is specified such as some apartment doors where a 2 hour fire rating is required. Their design allows itself to fit over many existing lock holes and easily cover all the existing fitting marks so this digital lock is a good choice for a replacement front door lock.  Weather the lock is a keyless lock or a keyed lock it can now be replaced with a keyless lock.

Some improvements to these keyless door locks include a lever handle on the inside which replaces the small knob design.  The lever handle makes it much easier to open the door and more useable as an escape lock.  There is also a fitting plate used to install the lock made of stainless steel to make it more durable and stronger.

Do you know if you need a right hand or left hand model?  Well this lock is not handed as in many other lever handle locks.  It will fit either a right or left hand door making the installation much simpler.  There is also an easy to grip outer knob to make it easy to open.

The code is changeable by removing it from the door.  It comes with instructions and it is a job that can be done by the owner without the hassle of calling a locksmith every time the lock needs to be changed.

The latch is a heavy duty design with a 60mm backset.  There is also a 70mm backset latch available.
