Tiltadoor lock kit

Tiltadoor lock kit

Lenlok tilt-a-door lock kit

There are still many tilt-a-door garage doors in operation through out Brisbane and Australia. The tilt-a-door pre-dates the panel lift door and even the roller door. The tilt a door opens on a hinge system that lifts the door directly overhead so a car can be driven into the garage.

This locksmith tilt-a-door lock kit comes with everything you need to replace or fit from new the locking system on door. As it is all in the one packet, it is often better to buy the kit rather then replace just one part of a worn out locking system.

The kit comes with the main T handle, the inside lever assembly, the wire, 2 latches and all the fixing nuts and bolts.

The main star of the kit is the T handle. This is an upgraded version of the original T handle lock. This lock is much more solid and has a better internal locking system. It can be rekeyed to match other locks in the home. It uses a Lockwood style C4 key which is by far the most used key in Brisbane. Your locksmith can advise you on rekeying locks to match the one key. The T handle lock is handed, meaning that it will turn either to the left or right to unlock. The handing can be easily changed by adjusting the handing plate at the back of the lock.

The wire that comes with the lock will suit all standard size tilt-a-door’s. Some doors are made wider then standard and the wire will not be long enough to suit some of these double car garage doors. The wire is secured at both ends with wire clamps which are included in the kit.

The latches are standard design for all tilt-a-door locks. They are zinc plated for rust protection and should last for the life of the door.

The inside handle assembly is simpler then the original tilt-a-door design. It is held on the back spindle of the T handle with a clamp. The inside handle assembly has pre drilled holes for the wire to pass through. The wire is only clamped at either end of the latches to give equal tension to both latches.

For a tilt-a-door with broken wire, worn out lock, bent handles, etc, this lock kit is a good investment. Replacing all the suspect parts with this lock kit will ensure the door keeps working for many years to come. Ask a locksmith for more information regarding the replacement of locks on garage doors. There are many different types of locks that your locksmith keeps to replace all doors.

Lenlok Roller Door Lock

Lenlok Roller Door Lock

Lenlok make a large range of locks for garage doors. When you are thinking of changing your roller door lock, dont go past this Lenlok roller door lock.   This is the heavy duty model with removable cylinder.

As locksmiths we are often called to change or rekey locks on roller doors. When a client pays us good money to change the keys on a roller door lock, they want to be sure the old keys will no longer work in the lock.

turning knob lenlok roller door lockThe problem with most standard roller door locks is that they use a wafer or disc lock which offers little security. Even when the combination of the lock cylinder is changed there is a chance that another key will still operate in the lock. This is due to the poor tolerances in the cylinder, soft materials used in their construction, low number of disc combinations and wear in the lock cylinder.

As there are problems with rekeying roller door locks (and other similar lock designs), we will usually recommend that the lock be replaced with a more secure type of lock. This is not because we want to sell more locks. It is due to the high chance of an old key or random key working in your roller door.

front cover plate lenlok roller door lockThe Lenlok heavy duty roller door lock is one choice you have when a new roller door lock is required for your door.

The Lenlok roller door lock does not look too much different from standard roller door locks. Although there are a couple of features that make this lock far better then standard disc type locks.

The Lenlok roller door lock has a completely replaceable cylinder assembly. There are various cylinder types that can be fitted to the lock. The more secure locking cylinder is the pin tumbler cylinder. The pin cylinder uses pins as used in most other house and commercial lock cylinders.

key and lock cylinder lenlok roller door lockA pin tumbler cylinder makes it much harder to force with a screw driver or other tool. Compared to disc locks, a pin cylinder is a great upgrade for a roller door.

A pin cylinder can also have its barrel changed to suit a range of registered key systems. It can even be replaced with a high security lock barrel for the best security. The standard pin cylinder can be changed to suit a Lockwood style C4 key. The C4 key is the most common key used in Brisbane for house doors and commercial doors. It is possible to have a house changed to suit just one key. Even the garage door can be on the same key.

This lock also comes with 2 locking functions. For a garage you want to access from the inside such as one connected to the house, the lenlok roller door lock can be set to be opened with the turning knob on the inside of the lock. This gives free access to open and close the lock from the inside of the garage.

turning knob lenlok roller door lockIf the garage has no other access doors or the lock is fitted to a storage room, the lock can be set to operate as a deadlock. When the lock is operating as a deadlock, the inside turning knob will no longer open or close the lock. The lock must be opened and closed using the key from the ouside or the inside. Deadlocking adds increased security for storage areas. When unlocking with a key from the inside a “reverse key” is used. The reverse key only operates the lock on the inside of the door. This is because a reverse broached key only will slide into the inside of the lock.

There are a few different model designs of the Lenlok roller door lock. They are designed to match existing roller door locks. The main difference is the length of the arms and size of the face plate.

Our 24 hour locksmiths in Brisbane carry a range of Lenlok roller door locks to suit different door types. Call us anytime for replacement roller door locks or to have your lock changed.

3D Printed Lock Barrels Brisbane

3D Printed Lock Barrels Brisbane

Changing lock barrels to suit any key 3D printed style

Are you one of those people who has been lying awake in bed just pondering the question “Can a lock barrell be 3D printed ?”  Well your question has now been well and truly answered.  Our 24 hour locksmiths have successfully 3D printed a range of lock barrels in different broachings.  Broaching to suit even high security registered key systems!

3D printed lock barrel Brisbane locksmith       While these lock barrels are made of plastic, it is possible and cost effective to have the barrels 3D printed on a higher end metal 3D printer.  A metal printer can make the lock barrels as well as the entire locks out of materials such as Brass or Stainless Steel.  With additive manufacturing hardened anti-drill obstructions can even be added to the lock barrel.  This would give the lock a higher degree of security then many standard lock barrels.

Why would a locksmith want to 3D print lock barrels? Lock barrels are easily replaced in most locks.  A new lock barrel can be added to a lock to match the broaching of a different key.  Replacing all the lock barrels for a series of locks can make the locks all work on a new uniquely warded high security key.   The ability to reproduce a lock barrel to match a key system can unlock lucrative opportunities with already installed security key systems.

IMG_5008The bigger picture is that smaller companies can manufacture a lot more unique products that either did not exist or were not available or practical to manufacture using other techniques.

As additive manufacturing matures the security a locksmith can offer their customer becomes much more unique.  Custom broaching for locks is just the start.  Completely new lock and key designs can be prototyped quickly and manufactured on demand.  Where once locksmiths were tied to security key systems manufactured by large multi-national companies it is now becoming possible for small companies to manufacture on demand security products to suit a specific customer.

While Our plastic lock barrels might just be prototypes,  Production 3D printed parts are not far away.

Keys copy Brisbane

Keys cut in Brisbane locksmith One of the jobs we get called to quite as bit as locksmiths in Brisbane is to repair locks or unlock a door due to a key that is copied very badly.  This especially can happen when moving to a new house or apartment.  The real estate can give a key which they have had cut that is not working in the lock.  As people often move on a weekend, these jobs where people need to be rescued are often when the real estate is closed.   A copied keys accuracy is very important.

Many copy keys are cut on the wrong key blank.  Having the correct blank makes a large difference to the key working or not.  Even if the key fits into the lock, a key cut on the wrong key blank may still not work and your may require a locksmith to unlock the door.   Some key blanks will sit higher or lower in the lock, making the key cuts in the wrong position.   It is easy for an unskilled key cutter to mix up key blanks if they have not seen the type of blank before.

Keys cut for door. Copy keys by locksmith in Brisbane 24 hour locksmithsCutting accurate keys requires accurate key cutting machinery.  Key cutters in shopping centres and hardware shops almost always cut keys by tracing the key which they are given and reproducing the cut key onto the blank using a cutting wheel.  The key cutting machine needs to be very accurate, but unfortunately many key cutting machines are not calibrated correctly.  Often the keys are cut too deep.  There is a better chance of a key working cut deep, rather then shallow.   So adjusting machinery to cut a little deep is often what is done.  Problem is that this does not make for an accurate key.

Key cutting machine Brisbane Locksmith

Locksmiths can cut keys to code.  A cut key to code will be very accurate.  The key is cut to the manufacturers depths on a special code key cutting machine.  Keys cut this way eliminate many inaccuracies.   If a locksmith knows the code of the key, the key can be cut even if the key is not present or lost.  Many registered keys are cut to code, ensuring they are all cut very accurately.

When getting a key cut, it is always advisable to use a trade qualified locksmith.  They are specialists in locks and keys.  A Brisbane locksmith will always give you the best key copy available.

Changing locks 24 Hours

Changing locks 24 Hours

Changing Locks Brisbane Locksmith

Lock Pinning Kit

Often when we change locks on a house or business in Brisbane it is so the occupants can be sure that other people with keys to their doors can not open the locks. This is by far the better type of lock changing job we do. Getting locks changed to avoid future problems is smart and should be done when ever you move to a new house, shop or office or when ever you dont want someone to come back into your home or get through your doors.

As we are a twenty four hour locksmith, we get jobs all hours of the day and night. The night time jobs are almost always emergency locksmith jobs where people are in some type of predicament and they need help from a locksmith in Brisbane. These types of jobs often are because their keys have been stolen and there is an urgent need to secure the home or business as it is more then likely the thief will return.

Lock cylinder showing coloured pins brisbane locksmithChanging the locks is either done in two ways. Either the lock or lock cylinders will be replaced or the lock pins will be changed to a new key combination. There are reasons for doing either type of lock changing. If a lock is damaged or broken then replacing the lock or cylinder is a must. Sometimes it is even less expensive to replace the cylinder then to repin or rekey the lock. If time is of the essence, some locks are better to be replaced as they can be time consuming to disassemble.

The advantages of just replacing the pins in locks are that the lock does not have to be replaced. Some locks are no longer made and impossible to replace. If the lock is not a standard fitting then the holes in the door would need to be repaired. Some locks are also very expensive. Replacing an entire lock is often just no cost effective. Even though some locks can be replaced with cheaper versions, the cheaper locks are never as good a quality as the more expensive higher quality locks. Going cheap on security on a home or business can lead to some very bad outcomes.

Our locksmiths in Brisbane always consider the most cost effective way to change your locks. If changing the locks is too time consuming or not a viable option, then new lock cylinders can be the better option.

Locks changed Locksmith Brisbane lock shop 24 hour locksmithsIn Brisbane, rekeying the locks quite often is the better option. The major advantage is that you can have all the locks on your doors with the same key or even master keyed. Simply replacing locks will give a different key for each lock. Our Brisbane locksmiths can change the locks all to the one key to make it much simpler for you to operate your locks. There is never a need to go searching for the correct key for the lock.

With our after hours lock service we are always mindful of your costs and try our best to give you the best solution. Our locksmith vans are all equipped to change locks in the middle of the night and we carry all the parts and replacement cylinders and locks needed for Brisbane. Getting people out of a bad situation and changing their locks 24 hours if they have been burgled or keys stolen is a big part of our 24 hour locksmiths job.

Garage door security

Garage door lock. Old type of roller door

Old style garage door lock

Garage doors are often an overlooked part of the home security.

If the garage is not attached to the main house then it might not be thought of as a safety issue. Maybe the garage door lock should be more attention paid to it as the value of goods kept in the average garage can be quite high! If it is worth putting a lock on the door then it is probably worth making sure a burglar can not easily break into the garage.

Lockwood 001 deadlock

Lockwood Deadlatch

As a Brisbane locksmith we are often called to secure garage doors after a break and enter. Often the garage door is fitted with an inadequate lock which does not keep even then most novice thief from easily entering. An older garage in Brisbane often is fitted with a latch type lock which can be defeated with tools as simple as a credit card. One way of changing the locks and upgrading a door like this might be to fit a Lockwood 001 Deadlatch or a Deadbolt which will stop an easy door opening attempt. The type of door and door frame can dictate the best type of lock to be fitted in a specific situation. A garage such as a Titan Shed made from colourbond steel might need a specific lock type to suit a steel plate door such as a Lockwood 355 Deadlock.

The main door on a garage or shed should also be a concern. A lock that can be opened with a screwdriver or random key is not very secure. This is the type of lock people say only keep the honest people out. A true security lock with a brass cylinder is a much more secure lock and will be able to withstand a forced attack that most standard garage door locks will not. The keys for a number of standard locks are very insecure. Often times a Unit block of garages will be able to be opened with keys from other units. This is a good indication that the lock is very insecure and should be replaced.

Brass Cylinder Garage Door Lock

There are a range of garage door locks available that take a more secure cylinder and have a much more solid lock design. Fitting a better lock to the door is an easy way to greatly upgrade garage security. A qualified locksmith can show if there are vulnerabilities in your garage or shed security. Leaving a garage insecure is really just leaving the security to chance. Personally I have found chance does not favor many people. Being prepared is always a better way to deal with your locks and security.

Lockwood Lock West End

Keys and Lockwood Deadlock fitted to aluminium door

Lockwood Security suits this West End Property

Colour Matching and style are not something locksmiths are greatly known for. I just wanted to post a photo of the lock we fitted to this West End home. The home has Black anodised bi-fold doors and the customer wanted a lock that was not going to stand out. Most locks for these doors come in a standard Satin Chrome finish or a Polished Brass style finish. Finding a black colour lock to suit doors like these is not always an easy task.

Matching the colour of a black door with a brown lock

Lockwood deadlock matched colour

Not sure if you can easily tell from these photos but the lock we fitted is actually brown in colour. These brown locks actually look very good on a black anodised or powder coated aluminum frame. The dark colour is a much better choice then a standard Chrome or Gold finish.

The lock we fitted to these doors is a Lockwood 355 deadlock. These are a high security deadlock that positively lock the deadlock and the strike together so they can not be pulled apart without first unlocking the lock. They are well suited to this particular type of bi-fold door and can be used on a sliding door or a swinging door as well. These doors were built in a way that they could only be opened and locked from inside the house. The Lockwood 355 deadlock allows the doors to be opened from both the inside and outside.

The double cylinder deadlock when fully deadlocked can only be opened with the keys. Even if a burglar breaks into the home, the door can not be opened. With out easy access, the burglars movements are restricted and he will not be able to carry items through the door. As other doors in the house also have deadlocks, it becomes a struggle for the burglar to work effectively.

Bi-fold door fitted with lockwood 355 deadlock for added security

Lockwood 355 Deadlock inside view

The Lockwood style keys are the most common type of key style in Australia. There are a large range of branded locks here that will work on the same key type. This makes it easy to have locks changed to all suit the same key. The lockwood locks also have the Kinetic Defence system which can make lock picking and lock bumping very difficult.

Different types of doors require different types of locks. If you consult a qualified locksmith then you should always be informed which locks will suit your particular door. On a door such as this bi-fold door a regular deadlock just could not be fitted. I am really happy this home owner had one of our qualified locksmiths install this lock. Fitting the wrong type of lock to this door would have been a real nightmare for the owners of the home.

Lockwood Key Cut to Code

Cutting keys to code

Cutting keys to code is a bit different then having a key duplicated in a shopping centre. When you have a key duplicated the new key is traced from the existing key and cut onto the new key. This is something that we all have done. Cutting a duplicate key is easy, fast and cost effective. But there is a problem with duplicating a key like this. It is never exact. No matter how accurate you set up a key cutting machine, there will always be inaccuracies in the key. Usually this inaccuracy does not matter. If you have a worn lock or worn key or if the key has been duplicated before then there is going to be problems with duplicating the key.

Cutting keys to code by locksmith.

Key cutting machine used by locksmith to cuts keys to code

There is a way to cut a key that is accurate every time. That is when you cut a key to code. When you cut a key to code, it is not duplicated or traced in the way a regular key cutting machine key works. A code key is cut on a special code cutting machine which cuts the key very accurately to the manufacturers Space and Depth or specifications. The code machine cuts each cut in the key precisely the same each time. Code cutting machines are either computer controlled or use a mechanical system to set the space and depth of each cut.

code machine electronicKeys cut to code do not require the original key to be present for cutting. To cut a key to code all that is required is the code of the key or the correct depths the key is cut to. This way it is possible to cut a single key or keys for an entire master key system very fast and very accurately. Even if there is no key in existance, a key can be generated and cut to code.

code machine tibbeSome locks such as letter box locks, filing cabinets and even car keys can be cut to code. This is usually done when the key has been lost. All that is needed is a code from the lock then the locksmith can convert the code into a cut key.

Key for Kaba lock

Kaba Key

Not all keys are the same. Some keys that are cut to code require a special or dedicated code cutting machine. Keys such as Abloy, Assa, Lockwood Twin and EVVA require a unique code cutting machine, capable of cutting the keys specific to that brand and type of lock. Some keys are cut on angles while others are milled to form the cuts of the key.

Lock picked Kangaroo Point

Lock picked Kangaroo Point

Another student let back in to his room

Providing a 24 hour locksmith service in Brisbane, sometimes it is easy to forget just how essential the service is and how it helps so many people in their daily lives. Helping students to unlock their door is a fairly common type of job for us here at 24 Hour Locksmiths. In Brisbane we have a lot of international students who attend universities who from time to time find themselves in trouble with keys and locks. Often students from overseas countries are surprised that there is a 24 hour locksmith available to help them. Students we let back into their rooms and apartments are always grateful and always a pleasure to help.

Many locks on the doors at Kangaroo Point are a high security profile and contain lock pins that make the locks extremely difficult to open. Luckily this is our job, and bypassing and picking locked doors usually is not a difficult problem. Of course they are not all easy doors to pick the locks on. Some doors take a little longer to open then others but our locksmiths are trained to open even the trickiest locked doors.

This particular locked door uses a Lockwood mortice lock and it has a Registered Key system installed. The keys for this door can only be cut by the locksmith who installed the system. The lock cylinder used a paracentric key way which makes it very difficult to copy a key for the lock and also makes it very hard to insert a lock pick tool into the lock to open the door. Even though the lock was a difficult one to open, it didnt take our locksmith very long to have the door open and the student safe back in his apartment.
