Locked out after inspection

Locked out after inspection

So you just get home from work at 5:30 and find you cant get your key to work in the door. Scratching your head you see that the deadlock is locked. But you never lock the deadlock. Then you remember that you had a real estate inspection that day. Then the penny drops. The real estate agent must have locked the deadlock on the way our of your home. You don’t use the deadlock so of course you never put the deadlock key on your key-ring. You call the real estate for help, as they are the ones who locked you out. No answer. What to do. Its then you decide its easiest to call your local locksmith.

OK, its not just real estate agents that can lock you out. Often tradesmen, friends and family can be the cause. This is a very real scenario that as a locksmith I see all the time. Nobody likes having extra keys on their key-ring, so taking off keys that we do not use makes good sense. Well it makes good sense at the time.

Obviously trying to plan not to get locked out of your home is the best remedy. Keeping keys for all locks with you will ensure you do not get locked out. Having locks keyed alike by your locksmith is a great way to ensure you always have a key to unlock every lock. One key to unlock all your doors is very simple. If you know you are having people in your home, make sure you have all the keys with you to get back inside.

When the worst happens and you can not open the door, call a locksmith to get the door open again. A locksmith can pick the lock which you dont have a key to. This causes no damage to the door or lock and is an easy way to get back inside again. If you get a receipt from the locksmith, often you can claim back your costs too.

A locked door lock or screen door by a real estate agent or tradesman is very common and very inconvenient. If you do find yourself locked out, call our 24 hour locksmiths any time to get your door unlocked. We are members of the Master Locksmith Association and very skilled at opening locked doors.

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus is a very well known brand worldwide. It is known for its padlocks, bike locks and security related products. So how does the Abus double cylinder deadbolt hold up for security and quality?

Well you would expect the Abus double cylinder deadlock to be made in Germany. This lock however is made in Taiwan. The packaging and look of the lock do not look to be very different from many other Taiwanese made deadlocks on the market.

locksmith Brisbane deadbolt AbusThe finish on the Abus deadlock is very good. It has a bright chrome finish with an embossed Abus logo on the outside cylinder. Even the locking bolt has a bright chrome finish.

The locking bolt is adjustable to 60mm or 70mm. Adjusting is simpley done by twisting the front and back parts of the bolt assembly when the bolt is in the thrown position. The actual locking bolt also is made from solid steel with an insert in the centre to resist sawing attacks. The steel bolt is a bit of a surprise as most other similar deadbolts use a brass locking bolt.

The solid bolt is longer then the thrown portion of the bolt, leaving 10mm inside the bolt assembly. This gives the bolt extra strength from prying attacks then most other deadlocks of this type.

The lock body has two cylinders with pressed metal housing and a spacer ring behind each housing. The spacer ring can be removed for thick door types making the lock suitable for locks between 35mm – 45mm.

The lock cylinder of the Abus deadbolt mounts into a metal housing and is removable. It can be replaced with a high security cylinder. The lock cylinder can also be replaced with a registered key barrel if required.

The lock cylinder and barrel are a 6 pin design although out of the box a 5 pin key is used. The code on the key matches the cuts of the key.

The Abus deadbolt has no resistance to lock bumping or lock picking. The pins used in the lock are standard and no security pins are used.

Adding a registered security barrel or replacing the barrel altogether can make this lock a lot more secure. High security lock pins can also be added to increase security and stop lock bumping attacks or lock picking.

The lock has no hardened inserts to stop drilling attacks. Hardened pins in the lock barrel assembly and behind the mounting screws would have made this lock much harder to drill off the door.

Fitting the lock to a wooden door is fairly straight forward. It has the same standard tubular deadlock holes for fitting as most other deadbolts. This makes it easy to replace an existing deadbolt.

The Abus double cylinder deadbolt is a well made lock. It has a very smooth operation and should last for many years once fitted.

Abus give it a security rating of 7, which seems quite high for a lock with no pick protection, no bump key protection and no drilling defence. While high security barrels will increase the security of the lock when fitted to a door, out of the packet the lock is not a high security lock.

Lenlok Roller Door Lock

Lenlok Roller Door Lock

Lenlok make a large range of locks for garage doors. When you are thinking of changing your roller door lock, dont go past this Lenlok roller door lock.   This is the heavy duty model with removable cylinder.

As locksmiths we are often called to change or rekey locks on roller doors. When a client pays us good money to change the keys on a roller door lock, they want to be sure the old keys will no longer work in the lock.

turning knob lenlok roller door lockThe problem with most standard roller door locks is that they use a wafer or disc lock which offers little security. Even when the combination of the lock cylinder is changed there is a chance that another key will still operate in the lock. This is due to the poor tolerances in the cylinder, soft materials used in their construction, low number of disc combinations and wear in the lock cylinder.

As there are problems with rekeying roller door locks (and other similar lock designs), we will usually recommend that the lock be replaced with a more secure type of lock. This is not because we want to sell more locks. It is due to the high chance of an old key or random key working in your roller door.

The Lenlok roller door lock does not look too much different from standard roller door locks. Although there are a couple of features that make this lock far better then standard disc type locks.

The Lenlok roller door lock has a completely replaceable cylinder assembly. There are various cylinder types that can be fitted to the lock. The more secure locking cylinder is the pin tumbler cylinder. The pin cylinder uses pins as used in most other house and commercial lock cylinders.

key and lock cylinder lenlok roller door lockA pin tumbler cylinder makes it much harder to force with a screw driver or other tool. Compared to disc locks, a pin cylinder is a great upgrade for a roller door.

A pin cylinder can also have its barrel changed to suit a range of registered key systems. It can even be replaced with a high security lock barrel for the best security. The standard pin cylinder can be changed to suit a Lockwood style C4 key. The C4 key is the most common key used in Brisbane for house doors and commercial doors. It is possible to have a house changed to suit just one key. Even the garage door can be on the same key.

This lock also comes with 2 locking functions. For a garage you want to access from the inside such as one connected to the house, the lenlok roller door lock can be set to be opened with the turning knob on the inside of the lock. This gives free access to open and close the lock from the inside of the garage.

turning knob lenlok roller door lockIf the garage has no other access doors or the lock is fitted to a storage room, the lock can be set to operate as a deadlock. When the lock is operating as a deadlock, the inside turning knob will no longer open or close the lock. The lock must be opened and closed using the key from the ouside or the inside. Deadlocking adds increased security for storage areas. When unlocking with a key from the inside a “reverse key” is used. The reverse key only operates the lock on the inside of the door. This is because a reverse broached key only will slide into the inside of the lock.

There are a few different model designs of the Lenlok roller door lock. They are designed to match existing roller door locks. The main difference is the length of the arms and size of the face plate.

Our 24 hour locksmiths in Brisbane carry a range of Lenlok roller door locks to suit different door types. Call us anytime for replacement roller door locks or to have your lock changed.

Whitco Tasman Security lock

Whitco Tasman Security lock

Whitco Tasman Mk2 Security Door Lock

The Whitco Tasman Mk2 security door lock is one of the most common locks used on security screen doors in Brisbane.   It is designed to withstand a lot of high frequency use and last over 10 years.   The Mk2 Tasman is available with different functions and not all Mk2 Tasman variations will suit every security screen door.

DIY Security Screen lock Replacement

If you have a security screen door lock that has lost its spring, has saggy handles or just broken then you will want to replace it.  Before you go to the hardware shop buy a replacement lock there are a few things you really need to know.
Whitco Tasman security door lock in Brisbane fitted to door new or repair
Number one.
Security screen door locks come in 2 basic types. Locks for sliding doors and locks for swinging doors. Make sure you buy the correct one.

Number two.
Try to match up brands. The 3 most popular brands in Australia are Whitco, Doric and Lockwood. Matching the same brand of lock will make your life much easier when it comes to installation.

Number three.
Try to match the model. If your lock is a Whitco MK2, try to replace it with a Whitco MK2. A Whitco MK1 will not work on most doors that have a MK2 lock installed and vise versa.

Number four.
Even though you have the same model lock… Look harder… Even the same model locks can be different. The same model lock can have different functions that are not suited to your door.

Number five.
Most hardware shops do not sell security screen locks for triple lock doors. If you have a Crimsafe door or other well made screen it probably locks in three places on the door. The hardware shop locks might have the same name and model but they do not work.

Number six.
If you do not have a key for the lock to remove the cylinder, consider calling a locksmith to replace the lock.  It can save a lot of time and headaches as the lock will not be able to be removed from the door.

If you need help with the replacement of repair of a security door lock, our Brisbane locksmiths are always available.  We have a 24 hour emergency locksmith service which will come to your home or business whenever you are stuck.  Call us anytime for security screen door lock problems.
