Locked out in Brisbane

Locked out in Brisbane

It has been a busy Friday night in Brisbane. Tonight we have performed lockouts in Chermside, Upper Mount Gravatt, St Lucia and Kangaroo Point.  We were able to unlock all the doors tonight without any problems.  The number of people locked out side of their homes increases quite a bit this time of year as the weather heats up and it gets closer to Christmas.

Locked out in Brisbane. Need a locksmith to unlock a doorUnlocking the door at Upper Mount Gravatt tonight was an interesting job. We were not the first locksmith to attend the property. The first locksmith called could not unlock the door. The tried for over an hour and could not pick the lock. The tenant of the property informed us they used a pick gun to try to open the door. It was quickly evident that the lock they were trying to pick the pick gun would never have opened. It was a new style Lockwood 001 deadlatch. These locks use security pins that can not be picked with a pick gun or bumped with a bump key. We use a unique opening techinique to unlock a locked door with these Lockwood deadlocks. The customer was very happy to be back inside their apartment within a few minutes of our arrival.

It is normal that we can unlock a locked door within a few minutes. There are situations where it becomes very difficult to open a locked door. High security locks a challenge, which often can still be opened. The biggest challenges when opening locked doors are caused by lock malfunctions, broken locks and very weird situations. A broken lock can make it impossible to open a door, even when a key is available. A broken lock can often be unlocked and the door opened quite fast, although some situations require patience in figuring out exactly what is wrong with the lock. A broken latch inside a door is also a situation that requires skill to open the door.

In Brisbane there is an ever increasing number of high security locks. High security locks stop a lot of burglars from breaking into homes and businesses. They do however hinder a locksmith from quickly unlocking a door. Making a locksmiths job harder is not a bad thing! The harder it is for a locksmith, the harder it also is for criminals. Opening all types of doors with all types of locks is just part of a locksmiths job. Our locksmiths have a range of door opening techniques for many situations.

If you need a door unlocked in Brisbane, call our 24 hour locksmiths any time and we will come to you as quickly as possible.

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch

Lockwood 001 Deadlatch for metal frame doors

The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch is a well known lock in Brisbane. It has been a good choice for houses in Brisbane for over 20 years. The wooden frame version comes with a door frame strengthener that reinforces the the door frame and gives greater holding force which makes it much harder to kick the door in when this lock is installed properly.

The metal frame version of the Lockwood 001 is identical to the wooden frame version. Except the metal frame 001 comes with a metal frame strike.

Metal Frame Strike Lockwood 001 deadlatchThe metal frame strike comes in two pieces. It is in some ways similar to the wooden frame version in that the inside frame of the metal frame strike is where the holding force is obtained. The outer housing of the metal frame strike is attached by two screws to the inside frame.

The inside frame of the strike is screwed to the metal frame with metal thread screws. Holes are drilled and tapped into the metal frame of the door. It is these screws which provide the entire holding force for the strike. If the door was to be forced or kicked, it is these screws tapped into the metal frame which hold the strike secure.

Metal Frame Strike insert for Lockwood 001 deadlatchSince the screw holes of the metal frame strike are so crucial to the security of the lock, they are one of the most important installation steps. An incorrectly drilled and tapped screw can compromise the metal frame strikes’ ability to stop an intruder. Of course I would only recommend using a trade qualified locksmith to have this lock installed. In fact it is against the law in most situations to use a handyman or non locksmith to install this type of lock.

The Lockwood 001 fits to most apartment doors the same way it does to a standard wooden door. There are however a large number of requirements for apartment or unit fire doors that have to be considered when installing a Lockwood 001 deadlatch in this situation. Fire doors internally are very different to wooden doors.

The Lockwood 001 is able to be deadlocked from the inside. The way this works is that the inside knob is locked with the key. Once locked from the inside it can not be opened without the key from either side. A red or green indicator on the inside of the the knob can alert you to the inside deadlatch being activated.

Once the key is turned and the inside knob is locked, the door can be pulled closed. If someone were to break in to your apartment through a window, the door would not be able to be opened without the key.

lockwood-001-cylinderOn returning home and opening the 001 from the outside, the inside deadlatching will automatically kick off. So the inside knob will be free to turn so you can exit the door. This is to help prevent you from being locked inside your apartment.

The Lockwood 001 uses a standard Lockwood key. The lock can be clanged to suit other keys in your apartment. It can also have lock cylinders or barrels replaced to suit most high security locking systems.

lockwood-001-keyThe standard cylinders use Lockwood’s Kinetic Defence pin and cylinder design. This does make the key feel rough to insert. This is especially noticeable when the key is inserted into the inside locking knob cylinder as it is spring loaded. The rough feel of the key being inserted is a trade off for added security to protect against lock bumping and lock picking. We have to give Lockwood credit for trying to make their locks more secure from simple opening techniques, so a lock that does not feel smooth is a small price to pay.

As the Lockwood 001 metal frame strike is one of the only deadlatches that can be fitted to most apartment doors there is not much to compare it to. This is a lock that has been tested by time and has performed very well protecting our homes. It is a good choice for your Brisbane apartment or unit door. Always use a qualified locksmith when installing this lock. There are quite a few laws and regulations that do need to be followed regarding its installation.

Lockwood 3572 Vestibule lock

Lockwood 3572 Vestibule lock

Lockwood 3572  Review

The Lockwood 3572 mortise lock is one of the most common lock found on apartment doors, government buildings, commercial premises and many other places in Brisbane.  I hope this helps explain a little about this lock

Supplied in a red box

Lockwood 3572 in boxThe Lockwood 3572 mortise lock body is sold  separate to handles, cylinder and turnsnibs.  They are sold separately simply because there are just so many options to choose from in design and function.

The lock body is diecast with a stainless steel latch bolt and a stainless steel deadlatching pin.

On the face of the body it has 2 screw holes for attaching the face plate and 2 holes for cylinder or adapter pins.

On each side of the lock it has a large cylinder hole and a square spindle hole. There are also a couple of adjustment holes and screws and holes for handle mounting

features

It might look like just any other lock, but the Lockwood 3572 has so many features that I am sure I will miss a few.

Lockwood 3572 latchLets start with the latch. The latch is made from stainless steel and attaches to the inside latch plate assembly via a 12mm rotating shaft.  The bolt can be rotated to suit either an inward or outward or opening door.  The face plate of the lock once fitted locks the latch into the set orientation.

The faceplate also holds the optional cylinder retainer pins in position.  The cylinder retaining pins are a tight push fit.  They are not threaded and require only slight pressure when inserting into a cylinder.

The top adjustment hole is for the “Kick Offf Function”.  The kick off function is not there to remind you when your favorite rugby team is playing.  What it does is “Kick Off” the locking function when the door is closed.  It is designed to stop people locking themselves out.

Lockwood 3572 adjust functionsThe lower adjustment hole is setable with a flat blade screwdriver.  Turning this setting screw will set the lock to have either an escape function where the lock is always free to open or it will make the lock handles lockable.  There is a setable escape function on both sides of the lock for the inside and outside handle.

The square spindle hole is separated in the centre by a dividing plate.  This allows the inside and outside handles to operate independently. So it is possible for the outside handle to be locked and the inside to be free to open the door.

The handle fitting holes are designed to match the various handle designs available to suit the Lockwood 3572.

That is about all the external features of this lock but in no where near explains the functions available.

Other lock options

Lockwood 3572 cylinder retainerThis is where this lock starts to get exceedingly interesting.

For example the locking cylinder comes in satin chrome, bright chrome and polished brass.  They can also be ordered in antique bronze and a whole range of special finishes.  The cylinder can also be an extended cylinder.  An extended cylinder comes in 50mm 62mm 78mm 86mm and 100mm and dont forget the standard 39mm cylinder.

Both the cylinder and snib adapter also have a range of different cams.  There is an X, W, Y, Z and M cam for the cylinders.  There is also a range of 6 different cams available for the snib adapter.  Of course these cams can be used in any combination on the door.  Making over 250 different functions available for this lock, just with cam and snib adapter alone.

Did I mention there is also a round cylinder available for this lock?  There are just so many options for this lock.

Of course there is also a rebated kit avaliable for double doors.

Lockwood 3572 locks and cylindersThen you have the range of high security lock cylinders and registered key systems that also are compatiable with this lock. Compatiable cylinders include Lockwood MT5, Lockwood’s Generation 6, Lockwood twin, bilock, Galaxy, series 6, Salto, Multi lock, MLA DC1, MLA LSGP, Binary Plus, Kaba Expert, Pextra, IP6, IP7, Abloy protec, Abloy protec 2, etc….

Wow there are so many compatible keying systems available with this lock. I cant even list ¼ of them!

Did I mention there is also a 3570 hold back cylinder?  I forget.  There are so many options and functions for this lock.

Handles

Lockwood Plate handle Lockwood Rose type handleSorry guys we’re not done yet.  I haven’t even mentioned the handle options!
Ok so I will try to be quick.

So the Lockwood handles comes in 2 main types.  There are handles with a plate extending the length of the lock covering the cylinder hole and the spindle, which is screwed on from the inside.  Then there is the Rose type handles and cylinder escutcheons. These come in 2 separate pieces for the handles and the cylinders.

The variety of handles, knobs, plates, escutcheons, is very large. There are commercial looking levers, plates to suit hospitals.  Modern designs to suit apartment doors, square designs.  Lockwood has a list of handle designs longer then your arm!

Finish

Lockwood 3572 face plate satin chromeThe finish of the 3572SC is brushed stainless steel.  The only part of the lock body visible is the plate on the edge of the door.  Of course the handles have so many options in colour and texture the finish will depend on what you require in a lock.  The lock cover plate and strike are mostly seen in satin chrome or polished brass.

ugly score

Is this lock ugly?
I have to give this lock a very low ugly score. Simply due to the number of handle options.  You can choose handles that are to your taste. If you do not like the way it looks you can simply change the handles to something more appropriate.

Fitting

Is the 3570 easy to fit?

Lockwood 3572 fitting templateOK, this is a mortise lock.  They are one of the most time consuming locks to install from scratch.  A large opening needs to be made in the edge of the door to install the lock.  Lockwood provides a template to help with installation and even part of the box folds out into a template to help with fitting the cylinder holes and handles.

Retrofitting

This lock is generally only fitted to a door where a very similar type of lock has been installed.  There are locks made by other manufacturers that use a very similar, if not identical hole pattern to the Lockwood 3570.  The Lockwood 3570 can replace mortise locks made by Gainsbrough, Dorma, Kaba and others.

Uses – types of doors

The Lockwood 3570 can be installed on just about any wooden door.  It can be used on fire escape doors as well as fire rated doors. It is fitted to many apartment doors for this reason.  The fire rating may depend on the type of door the lock is fitted to.  Many specialty fire doors are designed to use the Lockwood 3572 mortise lock.

It is used on commercial doors as well such as hospitals, shops, factories, storerooms, fire escapes and a whole lot more.  It is also fitted to doors in homes around Australia.

security

Lockwood 3572 turn snib adaptorAs there is such a wide range of cylinders for this lock, the security of the locking cylinder is very dependent on your choice.  A cheap non original cylinder might be very easy to bump or pick.  A high security on the other hand will make it almost impossible to pick the lock.

manipulating

The lock when fitted to the door has no points of access for manipulation.  The latch can not be slipped with a piece of plastic if fitted correctly due to the deadlatching pin.  The cylinder hole has no extra gaps for insertion of opening tools.

The type of handles used with this lock can make the lock more secure.  Generally the square plate furniture is recommended over the rose furniture.

If an escape function is used on the inside handle, this can on certain doors make the lock vulnerable to certain types of opening techniques.

A look inside

Lockwood 3572 inside viewAs complicated as this lock seems, it is actually quite minimalist in its design.  Other locks can have many more springs and small parts.
The lock has a die-cast body with mostly stainless steel parts.  The locking bolt mechanism which locks the handles I believe is die-cast although the end which actually contacts the handles hub is steel.  It is really their rather basic design which makes them relatively hassle free.

Reliability

Lockwood have been manufacturing this type of mortise lock for many years and they have a reputation of being one of the best mortise locks for good reason.  They are an extremely reliable lock.  They are very versatile, have a large array of functions and made heavy duty enough to operate on commercial doors.

As a replacement lock or a lock for a new building the Lockwood 3570 series is definitely a good choice.

Commercial Latching Lock

Commercial Latching Lock

Self closing commercial or shop front door lock

Most commercial doors used in shop fronts in Brisbane use a standard design. They are glass doors with an aluminium frame. They contain toughened glass and made to withstand heavy traffic and the rigours of a commercial environment. A Lockwood lock specially designed for a shop front door is usually installed as standard.

Lockwood Commercial Door Latching Lock

The standard Lockwood lock used for a shop front door will have a lever handle on the inside with a oval key cylinder on the outside. When locked these locks throw a bolt up into the strike plate of the door jamb or in the case of double doors the locking bolt is locked into the opposite door.

The problem that is often faced with shop owners and commercial business is that these locks are either always open or in the locked position. You can not make these locks latch closed.

There is a Lockwood lock specially designed for shop front doors that solves this problem. This lock is designed with a latch bolt instead of a throw bolt. The latch bolt allows for the door to latch closed when the door is shut. Lockwood have designed this door lock to fit inside a commercial aluminium frame door and give security a shop or commercial premises requires.

The Lockwood commercial door latch can be used in a few different situations. It is possible to install the lock so it can be opened with handles on each side of the door or just with a key to unlock on the outside. It can even be installed with a hold back cylinder so that during opening hours the door is always free to push or pull open.

Commercial doors need to be compliant with local Brisbane fire codes and national standards for fire doors. The Lockwood commercial latching lock is generally fitted with an escape function to comply with fire escape legislation. The particular building specifications always need to be taken into account when choosing the locking function for the door.

This lock also comforms to Australian Standards AS4145.2-2008, AS4145.2-2008 and AS4145.2- 2008. Wich gives it a security level of SL8 with an anti-drill lock cylinder. A D8 level for durability and C6 anti-corrosion durability.

This latching lock can be fitted in place of the standard swing bolt lock. It can be fitted with a wide range of high security locking cylinders including Kaba, EVVA and Registered Key systems. It can also be keyed alike to other locks in the building or master keyed as required. It can also be used in conjunction with access control systems and push button code locks.

Garage door security

Garage door lock. Old type of roller door

Old style garage door lock

Garage doors are often an overlooked part of the home security.

If the garage is not attached to the main house then it might not be thought of as a safety issue. Maybe the garage door lock should be more attention paid to it as the value of goods kept in the average garage can be quite high! If it is worth putting a lock on the door then it is probably worth making sure a burglar can not easily break into the garage.

Lockwood 001 deadlock

Lockwood Deadlatch

As a Brisbane locksmith we are often called to secure garage doors after a break and enter. Often the garage door is fitted with an inadequate lock which does not keep even then most novice thief from easily entering. An older garage in Brisbane often is fitted with a latch type lock which can be defeated with tools as simple as a credit card. One way of changing the locks and upgrading a door like this might be to fit a Lockwood 001 Deadlatch or a Deadbolt which will stop an easy door opening attempt. The type of door and door frame can dictate the best type of lock to be fitted in a specific situation. A garage such as a Titan Shed made from colourbond steel might need a specific lock type to suit a steel plate door such as a Lockwood 355 Deadlock.

The main door on a garage or shed should also be a concern. A lock that can be opened with a screwdriver or random key is not very secure. This is the type of lock people say only keep the honest people out. A true security lock with a brass cylinder is a much more secure lock and will be able to withstand a forced attack that most standard garage door locks will not. The keys for a number of standard locks are very insecure. Often times a Unit block of garages will be able to be opened with keys from other units. This is a good indication that the lock is very insecure and should be replaced.

Brisbane Locksmith quality L Handle lock in box

Brass Cylinder Garage Door Lock

There are a range of garage door locks available that take a more secure cylinder and have a much more solid lock design. Fitting a better lock to the door is an easy way to greatly upgrade garage security. A qualified locksmith can show if there are vulnerabilities in your garage or shed security. Leaving a garage insecure is really just leaving the security to chance. Personally I have found chance does not favor many people. Being prepared is always a better way to deal with your locks and security.

Lockwood Lock West End

Keys and Lockwood Deadlock fitted to aluminium door

Lockwood Deadlock fitted to Anodised Aluminum door

Lockwood Security suits this West End Property

Colour Matching and style are not something locksmiths are greatly known for. I just wanted to post a photo of the lock we fitted to this West End home. The home has Black anodised bi-fold doors and the customer wanted a lock that was not going to stand out. Most locks for these doors come in a standard Satin Chrome finish or a Polished Brass style finish. Finding a black colour lock to suit doors like these is not always an easy task.

Matching the colour of a black door with a brown lock

Lockwood deadlock matched colour

Not sure if you can easily tell from these photos but the lock we fitted is actually brown in colour. These brown locks actually look very good on a black anodised or powder coated aluminum frame. The dark colour is a much better choice then a standard Chrome or Gold finish.

The lock we fitted to these doors is a Lockwood 355 deadlock. These are a high security deadlock that positively lock the deadlock and the strike together so they can not be pulled apart without first unlocking the lock. They are well suited to this particular type of bi-fold door and can be used on a sliding door or a swinging door as well. These doors were built in a way that they could only be opened and locked from inside the house. The Lockwood 355 deadlock allows the doors to be opened from both the inside and outside.

The double cylinder deadlock when fully deadlocked can only be opened with the keys. Even if a burglar breaks into the home, the door can not be opened. With out easy access, the burglars movements are restricted and he will not be able to carry items through the door. As other doors in the house also have deadlocks, it becomes a struggle for the burglar to work effectively.

Bi-fold door fitted with lockwood 355 deadlock for added security

Lockwood 355 Deadlock inside view

The Lockwood style keys are the most common type of key style in Australia. There are a large range of branded locks here that will work on the same key type. This makes it easy to have locks changed to all suit the same key. The lockwood locks also have the Kinetic Defence system which can make lock picking and lock bumping very difficult.

Different types of doors require different types of locks. If you consult a qualified locksmith then you should always be informed which locks will suit your particular door. On a door such as this bi-fold door a regular deadlock just could not be fitted. I am really happy this home owner had one of our qualified locksmiths install this lock. Fitting the wrong type of lock to this door would have been a real nightmare for the owners of the home.

How to Pick a Lock

How to Pick a Lock

lock picking made easy

How to Pick a lock

Picking Locks

Picking locks is the technique used to open a lock without a key by lining up all the pins or discs to allow the lock barrel to turn. Well, we have all seen it in movies. You just grab a bobby pin out of your hair and stick it in the lock and Hey Presto!! lock opens… Uhrrrrr If only it was that easy!

So how do you pick a lock? Well if you type “How to pick a lock” into Google you get 121,000,000 results!! So you don’t need me to tell you.  Sites on lock picking are all over the net.  Anyway here is the top YouTube video result for “how to pick a lock”.  This explanation is not from a locksmith!  It is just some guy who bought a lock pick set online!

Well, the reason for this post was not to show you how to pick locks. It was more along the lines of how easy are door locks to pick in Brisbane. I say Brisbane, because the types of locks used for a particular region, city, country, etc differ quite a bit. So lets use Brisbane as a case study, because that is where I live.

I will try to be as honest as I can with regards to just how easy or hard locks are to pick. Even though I pick locks professionally as a 24 hour locksmith, I still have a pretty good idea just how hard it is to pick locks for an amateur lock picker.

Lock pick set to pick locks you can buy online.

Lock Pick Set for sale on the internet

Lock picks and picking tools can now be purchased on the internet which will open a range of locks in Brisbane. Sounds scary? Well, yeah, it is very scary! A lot of people might not know this? Even if they do know, then it might be a case of, well, my neighbors have the same locks. Why would a burglar target my home or business? There is truth to this. A lot of break ins are just random and not targeted. So having a lock on your door that can be easily picked open does not mean you are going to get broken into. Neither does leaving your door unlocked.

Some places are targeted for break and enters. Especially businesses that keep a high dollar value of stock or that are a high value target for thieves. I often see business premises that are locked up with a low quality lock that could easily be picked by amateur thieves.

I was going to try to go through some of the common key operated door locks that are sold at the large chain hardware shops and let you know how hard they are to pick open.  But there is no point to singling out any particular lock.  Truth is, just about all the door locks sold by the major chains are easy to pick with tools readily available on the internet!!
Before information and tools was easily available over the internet, it was a different story. But the truth is the door locks have not changed in their designs. It is not that they are any more insecure then they were 20 years ago. It is just that it is a lot easier to buy lock picking tools and find the information to use them. So I would have to say that most of the door locks sold by major hardware shops are not secure enough to fit to peoples homes or business.

Easy to pick open entrance lock set from hardware

Entrance Lock Set you might buy at a Hardware Shop

There are a few door locks sold by the major hardware shops that are not easy to pick. They are mainly the Lockwood range of domestic locks with Kinetic Defence cylinders. The Kinetic Defence cylinders use a very simple and effective pin design that makes them harder to pick open. Many locksmiths can not even pick these locks and have to drill the cylinder out if they need to open a locked door. Our 24 Hour Locksmith can pick Kinetic Defence lock cylinders, using specialised tools that are not available over the internet.

Lock from hardware shop easy to pick

What are you getting when you buy a lock at a hardware shop?

Is price a good guide of a quality lock?

No! Many expensive key operated door locks sold in hardware shops are still very easy to pick the lock cylinders. Basically most of the pin tumbler locks operate in the same way and these locks are easy to pick with low cost tools.

Can anyone pick a lock?

Yes and no. The tools make it possible for anyone to pick a lock with a little practice. The more practice you have at picking locks, the better you will get. Picking locks is a skill that is learned over time and when you get proficient at picking locks there is a much higher chance of picking each lock you come across. As a professional 24 hour locksmith, our skills at picking locks have to be of the highest standards. We need to be able to pick every lock that we possibly can to perform our job. An amateur lock picker might only be able to pick a percentage of the locks a professional locksmith can.

Are commercial locks any harder to pick?

Lock easy to pick on commercial door

Standard Pin Tumbler Commercial Door lock Cylinder

Many standard commercial locks use the same pin tumbler mechanism as domestic doors. These standard locks are just as easy to pick as domestic locks.
There are of course high security locks that can not be picked with tools bought on the net. Many businesses do use high security lock cylinders and are secure from these types of attacks.
Just simply having a heavy duty shop front lock fitted to your door, does not mean that your lock can not be picked! The lock must be changed from the standard pin tumbler cylinder to a high security lock cylinder that can not be picked.

I have a registered key system.

Restricted registered key lockwood Australia

Registered Key by Lockwood

There are many types of registered key systems on the market. Some use a high security cylinder that is practically impossible to pick. These are the best lock cylinders to have on your doors. Why you would secure your doors with anything less is a mystery to me. The cost is not that high, and the fact that it can not be picked open with tools you buy online makes these locks more then worth their value.
Some types of registered key systems use lock cylinders that are easy to pick. While others are very difficult with off the shelf products you buy on the net. It is very hard to tell the difference between an easy to pick registered key system and a difficult to pick system. It is not about the quality of the lock or price. It mostly comes down to weather the locksmith sold it as a difficult to pick lock cylinder or just a “Registered Key Lock System”. Locksmiths who know what they are doing can make registered keys locks very hard to pick. Sadly, most locksmiths do not ensure registered key lock cylinders are difficult to pick at all.

I have a deadlock on my door

Brava deadlock deadbolt

Deadlocks

Ummm Off the shelf deadlocks from hardware shops generally use the same Pin Tumbler Mechanism as other easy to pick locks. Deadlocks with a standard lock cylinder are no harder to pick with a tool bought over the internet then any other type of door locks.

Security Screen Doors

door with security lock

Security Screen Door

I have a $1000 stainless steel mesh door installed. It even stops attacks from “Bowling Balls” 🙂
I love that add!! If ever I get attacked by a bowling ball, I know I will be safe 🙂
Seriously, most of the security screen doors are installed with disc tumbler lock which is almost in the class of “Able to be picked with a bobby pin” These cheaper screen door locks might keep out flies, but spend $5.99 on the internet and buy a lock pick and you will have these doors open in a few seconds.
Screen doors also have a better lock cylinder that can be installed which is a Pin Tumbler lock. These locks are generally a little harder to pick. They are still easy enough to pick with tools you can buy on the internet.
Security screens can be placed onto a high security cylinder that can not practically be picked. You will only find the high security cylinders available from locksmiths.

Electronic locks

electronic lock Brisbane

Electronic door lock with key override

There are still very few homes fitted with electronic locks. Even though they are available at a reasonable price many locksmiths do not recommend them as a good alternative. Most electronic locks have their own unique vulnerabilities for which are not generally in the public domain so discussing ways to defeat electronic locks is out of the scope of this post.
One thing most electronic locks do have in common is that they also have a key override. If the override key is simply a standard pin tumbler lock, then being able to pick these locks is generally as easy as any other pin tumbler lock. This kind of makes any security feature of an electronic lock obsolete.

Electronic locks generally can be unreliable. Batteries go flat and many electronic locks just fail. Most electronic door locks have the batteries on the inside of the door, so a key override lock cylinder is an important feature.

Not all electronic locks are terrible. We fit a range of electronic locks that are reliable. We are careful to select locks that can not be bypassed or easily opened as many electronic locks can.

Lock picked Kangaroo Point

Another student let back in to his room

Providing a 24 hour locksmith service in Brisbane, sometimes it is easy to forget just how essential the service is and how it helps so many people in their daily lives. Helping students to unlock their door is a fairly common type of job for us here at 24 Hour Locksmiths. In Brisbane we have a lot of international students who attend universities who from time to time find themselves in trouble with keys and locks. Often students from overseas countries are surprised that there is a 24 hour locksmith available to help them. Students we let back into their rooms and apartments are always grateful and always a pleasure to help.

Many locks on the doors at Kangaroo Point are a high security profile and contain lock pins that make the locks extremely difficult to open. Luckily this is our job, and bypassing and picking locked doors usually is not a difficult problem. Of course they are not all easy doors to pick the locks on. Some doors take a little longer to open then others but our locksmiths are trained to open even the trickiest locked doors.

This particular locked door uses a Lockwood mortice lock and it has a Registered Key system installed. The keys for this door can only be cut by the locksmith who installed the system. The lock cylinder used a paracentric key way which makes it very difficult to copy a key for the lock and also makes it very hard to insert a lock pick tool into the lock to open the door. Even though the lock was a difficult one to open, it didnt take our locksmith very long to have the door open and the student safe back in his apartment.

Garage lock repair

Garage lock repair

Broken key in roller door

Roller door broken keyIt is easy to break a key off in a roller door. All you have to do is leave the key in the lock and roll the door up. This is a very common occurrence especially if you are not use to removing the key. It happens a lot when you have just moved into a new house of unit with a roller door garage door.

The photo is a picture or an old B&D roller door lock with a broken key sticking out of the lock. This key was not broken by rolling up the door. This lock is about 40 years old and has been operating perfectly with daily use for all that time. The lock was made by Lockwood and is a Pin Tumbler lock. The key in this lock can be removed in 2 positions which make the door either locked or unlocked. The lock has 2 separate sets of top pins.

The reason the key broke in the lock was because the plate at the back of the lock which connects to the locking arms or the garage door had come loose. The screws after 40 years finally worked their way loose. This caused the plate to turn further then it should and the key got stuck in the lock and the extra force applied to the key to try to remove it caused it to break.

The lock was repaired by adding a drop of lock-tite and tightening up the screws. The lock was still in good working order and should last quite a few more years yet. This garage was a double garage with twin roller doors. Both roller door locks operated on the same key. The other roller door was still working flawlessly.

These garage locks could have easily been replaced with a more modern type of lock. A preferred lock is one that could be keyed alike to the rest of the house. Having the whole lock on the same key is much more convenient and when replacing garage door locks it makes sense that this is a good time to upgrade to a one key for the whole house system of locks and keys.

The locks on these roller door locks continue to work well and the customer was satisfied and happy to keep their old roller door locks. Lets hope they get many more years out of these 40 plus year old locks.

Kangaroo Point Unlock Door

Kangaroo Point Unlock Door

Another door opened at Kangaroo Point

Other locksmiths in Brisbane who do emergency locksmith work at Kangaroo Point would understand that it is a suburb of Brisbane that is rather special in many ways. One way that Kangaroo Point is special is that it has a lot of upmarket units. By upmarket, I mean they are generally a bit more luxurious and many are in high rise buildings. Kangaroo Point might be a great place to live because it is close to the city, but it is also easy to lock the keys inside the apartment.

It is easier to lock your keys inside your apartment at Kangaroo Point because most doors are fire doors. The fire doors need a door closer to make sure the door closes but the door closer also makes it easier for the door to close and for people to lock themselves outside of the apartment.

Kangaroo Point door with lockwood deadlatch. 24 hour locksmtihs can pick these locks and unlock the door

Because of the fire door regulations at Kangaroo Point most apartment doors have the same type of deadlock or deadlatch installed on the door. The extra lock is usually always a Lockwood 001 deadlatch. The Lockwood 001 deadlock has for quite some time now come out of the packet with a higher security lock cylinder which Lockwood Australia calls “Kinetic Defence” The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch with Kinetic Defence cylinder is very different to “pick” open, then the older Lockwood locks. It requires a very different lock picking technique and old lock picking skills need to be upgraded. The Lockwood Kinetic Defence cylinders are also very hard to open with a bump key.

Lockwood Australia did a great job in making their locks harder to open. Well, lets face it, it is a lock manufacturers job to make their locks hard to open by any other means except the key.

The problem with locking yourself out of a Lockwood 001 deadlatch at Kangaroo point is that many locksmiths in Brisbane still do not know how to open these locks without forcing or drilling the lock open. You cant blame the locksmith, these locks are hard to pick open if you haven’t put the time into learning the skills required to open them. At 24 Hour Locksmith Brisbane one of the biggest part of our job is to know how to open locked doors. Our locksmiths are trained and taught how to open Lockwood Kinetic Defence locks which are on many doors at Kangaroo Point.

There is a buzz you get each time you open a door for a customer. Weather the lock is picked open or opened by other means, it is always our aim to open locks without any damage to the door or the lock. Every time a New Lockwood 001 Kinetic Defence deadlock is opened our locksmith Kangaroo Point gives us great satisfaction to know the hard work and training given to our locksmiths is paying off and our customers are benefiting in what seems to them to be a fast and easy door opening.
