CL Dimple Key Lock

CL Dimple Key Lock

CL make a range of cam locks, desk draw locks, filing cabinet locks and many other utility locks which are available from locksmiths in Brisbane. The CL range of locks represents a broad number of the most common utility locks for use in Australian homes and businesses. If you need a lock for a letterbox, desk drawer or shop display cabinet the CL locks can more then often provide the right lock for the job.

CL Lock barrel being inserted into housing Brisbane locksmithCL locks are designed for and sold by your locksmith. As a specialty locksmith product they come in a disassembled form. The lock bodies come separate from the cylinders. With the cylinders sold separately it is easy to change the cylinders to suit our customers needs. If a customer wants multiple locks on the same key, the cylinders can all be keyed alike and then inserted into the lock housing. If groups of keyed alike locks are needed, the cylinders can be adjusted or keyed into groups then inserted into the lock housings.

CL Lock desk drawer lock Brisbane locksmithAs the lock cylinders are sold separately to the the lock housings, CL has introduced a range of higher security dimple key cylinders. The dimple key cylinder mechanism works a little different to regular flat keys. The dimple key has holes or dimples drilled into the flat sides of the keys. The different depths and spacing of the dimple corresponds to the combination of the lock.

CL Lock filing cabinet lock locksmith BrisbaneThe dimple key cylinders make lock picking a lot more difficult. There is a lot less room in the lock cylinder to insert and manipulate the lock tumblers. This higher difficulty in lock picking gives the dimple lock cylinder an edge over the standard wafer lock. For many situations such as letter box locks where the standard locks can be easily picked or even a master key used, a dimple key letterbox lock offers a much greater degree of security.

CL Lock Keys Brisbane locksmithThe dimple key lock cylinders have a unique design where a notch in each disc pushes into the dimple of the key. The lock cylinder contains 6 spring loaded discs which must all precisely line up when the key is inserted to allow the lock to turn. Each disc can have 4 different depths which correspond to 4 different dimple sizes in the key. Only the correct key with the right combination of dimples will allow the lock to open.

The dimple keys are much shorter then a regular house key. They are made from nickel plated brass and have a stylish black plastic head. The keys are stamped with a code number that is used when keyed alike locks are required. The keys could be cut to code although at this time we are unable to make an original key from the code number stamped on the key.

The CL range of cam locks and drawer locks is very well priced and the dimple key range of cylinders is the cheapest non standard higher security utility locks we sell. By far the largest demand for these cheap dimple locks is for letter boxes. The dimple lock range of CL cam locks would make any criminal stealing mail think twice.

Cyberlock High Security

Cyberlock High Security

Cyberlock is a stand alone electronic locking system that does not require hard-wiring. A no wiring access control system allows locks to be located in any location such as office doors, gates, glass plate doors and even padlocks. There is no expense of running cables and no power outlets required for any Cyberlock lock.

CyberLock_Cylinders

The advantage of Cyberlock does not stop with a truly wireless access control system.

Until nowcyberlock communications, if you installed different types of locking systems you had no choice except to operate and manage them independently. Sitting side-by-side, the result is more expense, more operational work for facility and asset managers, and more opportunities for security breaches.

Cyberlock Access Control

EKA access control solves this through a system that can deliver single, unified access control. Through a hub called Flex, EKA is able to integrate with and manage any other access control system that uses a Weigand — compatible input device-from RFID, to electronic swipe and HID, Maglocks electronic strikes, and even bio-metric devices.

Thcyber keye EKA CyberKey is an electronic, programmable
smart key that cannot be duplicated. Via a
communicator, each key can be programmed with
the permissions for every system lock a key holder
is allowed to access: what locks the key can open,
as well as the days and times each lock can be opened. In this way, each user only needs one key to access any lock in a system, whether it’s a major entry door, or an obscure and remote cabinet padlock. Because it’s electronic, permissions can be revoked.

cyberlock 590 cylinderAdministrators can set key expirations to occur regularly (daily, weekly or more often) and can also do this on an ad-hoc basis when keys are lost. Each EKA key contains four levels of intelligence: encrypted access codes to ensure the key is from the same installation; the unique ID number of the key; access privileges for the user of the key; and storage of up to the last 3,900 events, both entries and denied entries.

The unique exchange of encrypted access codes between the lock and key gives a high degree of key integrity. The encrypted codes ensure keys from other systems cannot work in your system.

The CyberKey

  • Standard, rechargeable and Bluetooth versions available
  • Permanent memory holds access events, even if battery fails
  • Made from impact-resistant nylon for high durability
  • Cannot be duplicated
  • Can be set to expire
  • Water-resistant, coated electronics
  • Sacrificial brass tip prevents wearing of lock
  • Brass tip easily replaced in the field
  • Will not function once expired
  • Can be programmed for one lock, or many locks

CYBERLOCKS

cyberlock padlockCyberLocks are the exact dimensions of the mechanical cylinders they replace. They retrofit into the lock hardware with the ease of a mechanical cylinder, and do not change how the lock operates.

More than 300 existing CyberLock designs enable it to be installed in an enormous variety of interior and exterior doors, padlocks, containers and cabinets. There’s no wiring and no battery. All power is provided by the CyberKey: when a key comes in contact with the cylinder, it powers up the lock’s circuitry so key and lock communicate. If the key is not on the lost key list and the permissions are correct, the lock will open.

cyberlock PD cylinderThe circuitry stores four types of information: encrypted codes that ensure only keys within the system work with the lock; the unique ID number of the CyberLock; a record of the last 1,100 entries; and a list of lost keys to eliminate access by any key that is missing or lost.

cyberlock rim cyliderCyberLocks offer superior physical security. They have no conventional keyway that is vulnerable to being picked plus a tamper plug prevents the lock from opening if the front of the cylinder is struck.

Moreover, if torque is applied to cylinder, the front part separates from the back half. The back half of the cylinder expands, causing a brake effect that engages the sides of the cylinder’s case, stopping the rotation and leaving the cylinder in the locked position.

Communications

Cyberlock CyberPointsCommunicators underpin the flexibility of EKA Access Control Solution.

A network of communicators (each communicator can be given an IP address) allows users to validate their CyberKeys without returning to where the EKA software is hosted, instantly downloading audit trail data and receiving updated access permissions. Communicators are also designed to recharge rechargeable CyberKeys.

Communicators are so versatile that they can be mounted almost anywhere, maximising ability to control access to even the remotest assets.Single-key vault cabinet. Remote locations such as maintenance sheds often have many people areas requiring access. By allocating a PIN access code or swipe card to each user, one key is shared among many users, yet every user’s access history can be individually audited.

This smaller version of the authoriser can be employed when the additional security of keypad and PIN codes are not required.

Secure6 Restricted keys

Secure6 Restricted keys

Secure6 is a restricted keying system designed and available to locksmiths in Australia and New Zealand.

The design of the key is protected against illegal duplication until 2024. This gives peace of mind that your keys can not be duplicated by a key cutter or locksmith. Only the locksmith authorised to cut extra keys for the restricted system will duplicate the keys. The keys will only be duplicated once the identification of the system owner or authorised person is confirmed.

Secure6 Lock and barrel

This makes handing a key to a tenant, contractor, real estate agent, friend or any other person a lot safer. Locks do not have to be changed as you can be confident the keys were not duplicated by a key cutter.

restricted key

Secure6 key blank 6 pin

There are a wide variety of lock barrels available for the Secure6 restricted key system. The lock barrels are made in Australia to suit our specific needs. Barrels are made for Lockwood locks, Abus, Schlage, Whitco, and many more brands of locks. With so many lock barrels available there is no limit to where you can use the secure 6 restricted key system.

House doors, Commercial doors, glass doors, padlocks, security screen doors, Euro locks, deadlocks, block locks, lockable bolts, utility locks, garage locks, car park entry, gates, foyer entry, fire doors, apartment doors, electronic switch locks, etc can all be placed on a secure6 restricted key system.

A Secure6 key can work in many different locks

You can easily make just one key work in all secure6 locks. Even locks of different brands will now be able to open on the same secure6 key. As the lock barrels are replaced to all the same profile there will be no limits to the keying possibilities. Locks can be master keyed for a large commercial building or hotel with levels of access to suit your building.

The secure6 keys are made from hard nickel silver. Nickel silver is strong and hard wearing. The series6 keys will not break like brass or steel keys can. In heavy use areas the keys will not wear down and will maintain their accuracy for years to come. The keys are made by Silca in Italy and are milled very precisely to ensure quality of the lock system.

The lock barrels are each made to exact specifications and to very tight tolerances. The lock barrels can have hardened inserts installed to prevent drilling the barrels out. The unique profile of the key and warding inside the lock barrel insure no other key will fit into this lock.

When a secure6 system is installed, it is often possible to use the existing locks in a building and just change the lock barrel. The lock barrels are designed to match up with the most common locks in Brisbane. This can save a lot of money in the installation of a restricted key system as only a new lock barrel is required.

The keys can have a colourful plastic insert in the head of the key. This is for easy identification of a certain key. Certain levels of master keys can each have their own colour, or you can have a colour for each person with a key. The head of the secure6 key is larger then most standard keys. The larger head makes it much easier to operate the secure6 locks.

Cordless Key Cutting Machine

Having a key cutting machine that works anywhere without being connected to mains power or power from our locksmith vans comes in very handy. You can take the key cutting machine to any location, which can save a lot of time.

This is an Ilco key cutting machine which I purchased about 25 years ago. It was a dual voltage 240 volt and 12 volt machine. The original motor stopped working quite a few years ago and a replacement 12 volt motor was used for some time. Recently the 12 volt motor also stopped working. So it was time for an upgrade.Back of drill clamp with throttle key 24 hour locksmiths Brisbane

Using a cordless drill would be a practical way to have a truly cordless key cutting machine. Mounting a drill was a fairly straight forward process. There were 2 options to mounting the drill. Either using the drill connected directly to the drive shaft of the machine, or via a belt.

cordless dewalt drill in 3D printed clamp for key cutting machine 24 Hour locksmiths dewalt drill in 3D printed clamp with pully attached key machine 3d printed 24 hour locksmiths key

I chose the belt drive, as mounting the drill directly to the drive shaft had two large problems. It would increase the size of the machine as the drill would have to be added to the side of the key machine. There was also vibration issues as the drill and driveshaft would not align perfectly. A joint between the drill and driveshaft would have to have been used.

A simple drill holder and clamp was designed and made on a 3D printer. A throttle key was also made to turn the drill motor on and off and to control the speed. The drill clamp was made from PETG which should withstand the heat of a hot van in the Brisbane Summer. Holding the drill in place does not require a large amount of clamping force so a PETG clamp works well.

The 3D printable files for the drill clamp can be downloaded from our 24 Hour locksmith account.Key cutting machine with dewalt cordless drill for power supply

Code keys for safes

Code keys for safes

Many locks are stamped with a key code number but key codes alone are of little use. Extra information is usually needed to cut a key to code. A call to cut keys for room safes in a hotel was one such call that extra information was needed.  With no code information available these code keys needed a different approach.

key cut to code for safe lock code keys

Often a brand name of a safe, the make and model of a car or brand of furniture is also required to cut a key to code. The brand of the hotel room safes were an after market obscure brand that had no link to the locks that were fitted to the safes. The safes locks were all marked with a four number code between 1000 and 6000. The code numbers were a bit of a give away as to their meaning. The numbers seemed to be a direct code. A direct code is a code number that is also the cuts of the key. Such as 5226.

lock follower and key

As there were quite a few safes to cut keys to, being able to cut them to the code number would save time and money for the hotel owner. The problem with these safes was that there was no reference to the space and depth dimensions of the keys. If you do not know accurately the space and depth of the keys, then cutting keys accurately is not possible.

pick safe lock

In order to cut the keys to code, one of the locks was removed from the safe. The lock was then taken apart carefully, not to disturb the combination of the lock pins.

lock barrel for safe and key

Once the lock was apart, the key dimensions were deciphered and a code card made up for a code machine. This is a fairly old code machine that is used in one of our mobile locksmith vehicles. This code machine is a punch machine and uses no electricity. It is perfect for use on a job site to cut keys to code.

making code card for safe key

Once the code card was created, the keys could easily be cut to the code numbers on the front of the locks.

code card for sutting safe key

The keys all worked perfectly and the hotel owner was very happy that his safes could have new keys cut for them easily. Now if ever a key is lost for these safes, a new code key can quickly be produced from the code stamped on the lock.

Most codes keys can be cut a lot simpler then the keys for these safes. If keys are needed to code or even if no code is present on the lock our 24 hour locksmiths in Brisbane are always able to help.

Locked out in Brisbane

Locked out in Brisbane

It has been a busy Friday night in Brisbane. Tonight we have performed lockouts in Chermside, Upper Mount Gravatt, St Lucia and Kangaroo Point.  We were able to unlock all the doors tonight without any problems.  The number of people locked out side of their homes increases quite a bit this time of year as the weather heats up and it gets closer to Christmas.

Locked out in Brisbane. Need a locksmith to unlock a doorUnlocking the door at Upper Mount Gravatt tonight was an interesting job. We were not the first locksmith to attend the property. The first locksmith called could not unlock the door. The tried for over an hour and could not pick the lock. The tenant of the property informed us they used a pick gun to try to open the door. It was quickly evident that the lock they were trying to pick the pick gun would never have opened. It was a new style Lockwood 001 deadlatch. These locks use security pins that can not be picked with a pick gun or bumped with a bump key. We use a unique opening techinique to unlock a locked door with these Lockwood deadlocks. The customer was very happy to be back inside their apartment within a few minutes of our arrival.

It is normal that we can unlock a locked door within a few minutes. There are situations where it becomes very difficult to open a locked door. High security locks a challenge, which often can still be opened. The biggest challenges when opening locked doors are caused by lock malfunctions, broken locks and very weird situations. A broken lock can make it impossible to open a door, even when a key is available. A broken lock can often be unlocked and the door opened quite fast, although some situations require patience in figuring out exactly what is wrong with the lock. A broken latch inside a door is also a situation that requires skill to open the door.

In Brisbane there is an ever increasing number of high security locks. High security locks stop a lot of burglars from breaking into homes and businesses. They do however hinder a locksmith from quickly unlocking a door. Making a locksmiths job harder is not a bad thing! The harder it is for a locksmith, the harder it also is for criminals. Opening all types of doors with all types of locks is just part of a locksmiths job. Our locksmiths have a range of door opening techniques for many situations.

If you need a door unlocked in Brisbane, call our 24 hour locksmiths any time and we will come to you as quickly as possible.

Milner Safe Lock

Milner Safe Lock

Milner safe lock 3D printed replica

A milner safe is very easy to identify just by looking at the key hole. The distinctive 2 keyhole slots will give away the type of lock used in the safe every time. Milner were very popular safes for very good reason. They offered a high level of pick resistance and resistance from brute force attacks.

Usually the ingenuity of these old safe locks is only seen by locksmiths who service these safes and cut keys for them. Being able to replicate the lock easily on a 3D printer gives people a chance to see just how these locks work and allows them to build their own high security safe lock.

This Milner replica safe lock has a few changes from the original. The biggest noticeable difference is that the lock does not have a curtain. The curtain is an internal piece of the safe lock that serves 2 main purposes. It acts as the bolt throw and it shields the levers and inner working of the lock to make lock picking much harder. The curtain could not be 3d printed strong enough to make it work in this model. Instead the bolt throw uses the end cut of the key.

milner-safe-lock-locked 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-opening-with-top-on 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-open-with-key-assembled 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-opening 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-unlocked-with-key 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-top-lever-1 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-lever-4 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-lock-body-and-bolt 24 hour locksmith Brisbanemilner-safe-lock-key 24 hour locksmith Brisbane

The key is made much larger simply to add strength. A thin plastic key just isnt strong enough to work.
Interestingly, the original Milner keys were made from cast brass. A cast brass key is very strong! Modern steel keys have the flag welded onto the post. The weld in modern keys is a weak point and often causes keys to break inside a safe. If you can find a locksmith who has cast brass keys, they are a much better alternative for these safes.

The body of the lock is made in three sections. The bolt is inserted from the bottom of the lock and the levers are inserted from the top. A top and bottom plate hold the lock together.

As a locksmith in Brisbane I still see a lot of these old Milner safes still in operation. While they might not have the same resistance to modern attacks as more modern high security safes, picking the lock on a Milner safe is still a very hard endeavour which takes a lot of skill. Most Brisbane locksmiths would not even consider picking a Milner safe lock.

Tiltadoor lock kit

Tiltadoor lock kit

Lenlok tilt-a-door lock kit

There are still many tilt-a-door garage doors in operation through out Brisbane and Australia. The tilt-a-door pre-dates the panel lift door and even the roller door. The tilt a door opens on a hinge system that lifts the door directly overhead so a car can be driven into the garage.

This locksmith tilt-a-door lock kit comes with everything you need to replace or fit from new the locking system on door. As it is all in the one packet, it is often better to buy the kit rather then replace just one part of a worn out locking system.

The kit comes with the main T handle, the inside lever assembly, the wire, 2 latches and all the fixing nuts and bolts.

Lenlok tilt-a-door latches and inside handle

Lenlok tilt-a-door latches and inside handle

The main star of the kit is the T handle. This is an upgraded version of the original T handle lock. This lock is much more solid and has a better internal locking system. It can be rekeyed to match other locks in the home. It uses a Lockwood style C4 key which is by far the most used key in Brisbane. Your locksmith can advise you on rekeying locks to match the one key. The T handle lock is handed, meaning that it will turn either to the left or right to unlock. The handing can be easily changed by adjusting the handing plate at the back of the lock.

The wire that comes with the lock will suit all standard size tilt-a-door’s. Some doors are made wider then standard and the wire will not be long enough to suit some of these double car garage doors. The wire is secured at both ends with wire clamps which are included in the kit.

The latches are standard design for all tilt-a-door locks. They are zinc plated for rust protection and should last for the life of the door.

The inside handle assembly is simpler then the original tilt-a-door design. It is held on the back spindle of the T handle with a clamp. The inside handle assembly has pre drilled holes for the wire to pass through. The wire is only clamped at either end of the latches to give equal tension to both latches.

For a tilt-a-door with broken wire, worn out lock, bent handles, etc, this lock kit is a good investment. Replacing all the suspect parts with this lock kit will ensure the door keeps working for many years to come. Ask a locksmith for more information regarding the replacement of locks on garage doors. There are many different types of locks that your locksmith keeps to replace all doors.

Whitco Tasman Mk2

Whitco Tasman Mk2

Whitco Tasman mk2 security screen door lock is the most popular security door lock used in Brisbane. It replaced the Tasman mk1 which used a more conventional latch design which had no deadlatching pin.

The Whitco Tasman mk2 has proven to be a very successful and reliable lock for security screen doors. While we do replace many of these locks on a daily basis, it is often due to the sheer number of cycles these locks have performed. A security screen door can get opened and closed a large number of times. In an average home a security screen door can get used more then 100 times a day!

One of the latest upgrades to this screen door lock is the new handle spring design. Older designs used a handle spring that would cause the handles to sag over time. While the new design has not been around long enough to test in the field, it does look like the sagging of the handles might have been fixed. Whitco often update their designs when they discover a better way to manufacture their locks.

Whitco tasman mk2 blackThe standard mk2 Tasman comes with an inside locking snib which is used to snib the door locked when inside the house. The snib is removable so the door can be only locked with the key if needed. The snib can be unlocked from the outside of the door if fingers can get through the fly screen mesh. There are plastic guard plates available to prevent fingers unlocking the snib from the outside. Solid screen doors and Crimsafe doors make it much harder to unlock the snib from the outside and give added security in this regard. The locking snib is advisable to use when at home. A key deadlocked door can be much harder to exit in case of an emergency.

The latch on a Tasman looks quite different to other screen door locks. It has the main bolt latch and a separate deadlatching latch. The deadlatching latch does not enter the main hole on the strike. This allows the main latch to fully extend only when the door is shut. If the deadlatching latch is too far away from the door strike the latch will not extend fully and the door will not be able to be locked.

carbine profile cylinderCylinders are available for this security door lock in various styles. The most popular cylinders made by Whitco are the 10 disc and 5 pin cylinder. Both these locks can be keyed alike to other screen doors in the home. The 5 pin cylinder can be keyed alike to many more locks including most Lockwood locks. The choice of cylinder can depend on the level of security needed and other mechanical considerations. Some screen doors will not work with specific cylinders.

When removing a cylinder from a Tasman security screen door lock, you must have the key. The key must be turned to the locked position then the cylinder screw is removed. Without the key the cylinder will not be able to be removed and a locksmith will need to be called to remove the lock.

A lock with 3 point locking or triple locking will require a specific mk2 security screen lock with the triple locking parts. When installing or using a triple lock door always make sure the locking mechanism is easy to operate and not binding. An unaligned triple lock door will put a lot of extra force on the locking mechanism and cause the lock to prematurely fail.

The inside locking snib can give an indication of a worn out lock. If the inside snib has lost its’ spring and flicks from locked to unlocked without a noticeable click, then the lock will need to be replaced. The failure or breakage of the snib spring mechanism can cause the lock to fail and you can get locked in or out of the house.

Overall the Whitco Mk2 Tasman has proven itself to be an efficient and long lasting screen door lock for Brisbane homes. A little lock lubricant now and then will help to keep the screen door in working condition for many years. These locks are still readily available from locksmiths and are a current model for the foreseeable future.
