Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Abus is a very well known brand worldwide. It is known for its padlocks, bike locks and security related products. So how does the Abus double cylinder deadbolt hold up for security and quality?

Well you would expect the Abus double cylinder deadlock to be made in Germany. This lock however is made in Taiwan. The packaging and look of the lock do not look to be very different from many other Taiwanese made deadlocks on the market.

locksmith Brisbane deadbolt AbusThe finish on the Abus deadlock is very good. It has a bright chrome finish with an embossed Abus logo on the outside cylinder. Even the locking bolt has a bright chrome finish.

The locking bolt is adjustable to 60mm or 70mm. Adjusting is simpley done by twisting the front and back parts of the bolt assembly when the bolt is in the thrown position. The actual locking bolt also is made from solid steel with an insert in the centre to resist sawing attacks. The steel bolt is a bit of a surprise as most other similar deadbolts use a brass locking bolt.

The solid bolt is longer then the thrown portion of the bolt, leaving 10mm inside the bolt assembly. This gives the bolt extra strength from prying attacks then most other deadlocks of this type.

The lock body has two cylinders with pressed metal housing and a spacer ring behind each housing. The spacer ring can be removed for thick door types making the lock suitable for locks between 35mm – 45mm.

The lock cylinder of the Abus deadbolt mounts into a metal housing and is removable. It can be replaced with a high security cylinder. The lock cylinder can also be replaced with a registered key barrel if required.

The lock cylinder and barrel are a 6 pin design although out of the box a 5 pin key is used. The code on the key matches the cuts of the key.

The Abus deadbolt has no resistance to lock bumping or lock picking. The pins used in the lock are standard and no security pins are used.

Adding a registered security barrel or replacing the barrel altogether can make this lock a lot more secure. High security lock pins can also be added to increase security and stop lock bumping attacks or lock picking.

The lock has no hardened inserts to stop drilling attacks. Hardened pins in the lock barrel assembly and behind the mounting screws would have made this lock much harder to drill off the door.

Fitting the lock to a wooden door is fairly straight forward. It has the same standard tubular deadlock holes for fitting as most other deadbolts. This makes it easy to replace an existing deadbolt.

The Abus double cylinder deadbolt is a well made lock. It has a very smooth operation and should last for many years once fitted.

Abus give it a security rating of 7, which seems quite high for a lock with no pick protection, no bump key protection and no drilling defence. While high security barrels will increase the security of the lock when fitted to a door, out of the packet the lock is not a high security lock.

Lane Deadbolt review

Lane Deadbolt review

The lane deadbolt maximum security

The lane deadbolt is sold by most hardware shops in Brisbane. The one I have here was bought at a Bunnings hardware store. The brand Lane have been around in Australia for more then 25 years. Many years ago Lane made a range of deadlocks, entrance locks, commercial locks, etc that were fitted to a large number of homes, apartments, hotel doors, commercial doors, etc around Australia. Lane have changed their products a great deal over the years. This deadbolt is a good representation of the modern Lane locks.

packaging

Lane deadbolt packagingThe deadlock comes with some great colourful packaging. It makes reference to crime-stoppers, recycling, “maximum security”, etc. Reading the packaging this lock seems to be a very good quality lock suitable for fitting to entrance doors on a home.

The stainless steel plating on this lock has to be the best thing about this deadbolt. The finish is quite good and has the Lane logo stamped into the outer and inner lock body.

Deadbolt Bolt

Lane deadbolt boltThe lock bolt is adjustable to suit either a 60mm or 70mm backset. The actual bolt which throws into the door frame is die-cast with 2 small hardened pins to resist sawing. The bolt has an awful amount of wobble when it is in the locked position. The way the die-cast bolt is attached to the bolt throw mechanism is very poor. The bolt would not stand up to very much force at all.

Lock Cylinders

Lane deadbolt front of lockThe lock cylinders and barrel is all die-cast metal. The die casting is of a high quality with no visible flaws. The lock barrel is not filed (which is good). The pins in the lock are flat at the shear line (which is also good) and not rounded.

There is an issue with the die casting of this lock though. Die casting is far less accurate then machining a brass barrel and cylinder. Tolerances with the barrel and cylinder and accuracy especially with the pin holes in this lock is very bad. When the pin holes are too large, it makes the lock very easy to open by lock picking and bumping.

Lock Picking Lane Deadbolt

Lane deadbolt lock picking

lane deadbolt lock bumping

lane deadbolt lock bumping

Lock picking and lock bumping this lock was way too easy. It could quite literally be opened with a bobby pin. While this might sound normal if you watch the movies. In reality, this lock is one of the most insecure locks I have ever seen! It would seem that as manufacturing technology has increased, Lane have for some reason decided their locks need to decrease dramatically in security.

Summary of the Lane Deadbolt

As lane have on their packaging “Maximum Security” somebody buying this lock would be seriously misled. This lock I would have to say would have to be close to winning the prize for the most insecure lock on the Australian market. I would definitely not be fitting this lock to any door that has to be in any way secure. There are much better locks available in a similar price range that will give better security then the Lane deadbolt.

Carbine Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Carbine Deadbolt Double Cylinder

Why does the Carbine deadbolt sold by our Brisbane locksmiths sell better then large company brand name locks?

The Carbine double cylinder deadbolt has been one of our best selling deadbolts now for many years. This comes to no surprise to our Brisbane locksmiths. The Carbine deadbolt has many features other brand name locks just don’t have. What you see with locks is not always what you expect.

carbine deadlock for wooden doors. Carbine deadbolt high security Brisbane locksmithsThe Carbine double cylinder deadbolt is easy to install. It comes with instructions and a drilling template. The template can be placed on a door and drill holes marked with a punch. It can also be fitted in place of other locks. The holes match up to a standard entrance lock pattern used on a majority of Brisbane and Australian doors. A 52mm holesaw, 25mm boring bit, hammer, chisel, Philips screwdriver, punch, and drill is all that is needed to install this lock.

The locking bolt for the Carbine deadbolt is made from brass with a hardened steel insert. The hardened steel insert hinders attempts of sawing the bolt in half with a hacksaw or similar tool. The bolt assembly is a heavy duty. It works with a clear, crisp movement and is of high quality.  The bolt can be adjusted to suit 60mm or 70mm backsets.

The inside and outside cylinders of the Carbine deadbolt contain a removable all brass cylinder. The cylinder comes standard with a Lockwood compatible barrel. The C4 keyway of the lock matches the most common keyway used in Brisbane. The cylinder can be easily changed or rekeyed to match another key. It can also be master-keyed as the lock barrel is of high quality with good tolerances.

The lock barrel can be replaced with a high security barrel or registered key barrel. It takes a PD barrel which is a common barrel type used for many other locks in the Carbine range. The entire cylinder assembly can also be replaced with a high security cylinder. A high security cylinder makes the Carbine double cylinder deadbolt much more secure from lock picking and lock bumping attacks.

Lockwood security deadlock

Lockwood security deadlock

Feature packed Lockwood deadlock for Brisbane

Deadlock for commercial and domestic use by Lockwood. Safety indicator. Secure silver deadlockThe 005 Deadlock from Lockwood is a stylish deadbolt with some features that have been lacking from other deadlocks. A deadbolt is a deadbolt right? Well, not really! While they might all look similar, there are some big differences between the Lockwood 005 deadlock and others.

The first thing you will notice about the Lockwood 005 is…. well it looks very different from other deadlocks! Thin round profile on the outside. Looks more like a Lockwood 001 deadlatch on the inside. 4 screws to hold the bolt in the door. 4 screws for the strike. The bolt is shorter then many other deadbolts. This is a deadlock that is totally redesigned!

Door fixing

005 deadlock fixed to door with 4 screws in bolt. secure against burglary and lock picking. OK lets start with the 4 screws. I don’t think I have seen a lock made for the Australian market with a 4 screw strike or bolt before. Does it make much difference? Well yes it does! If you have ever seen a door kicked in, you would know they always split up the middle of the door. So why put screws right in the centre of the lock? It makes sense to offset the screws. It makes for less of a centre break line and four screws are better then two.

This lock is also able to be fitted in the place of an existing deadlock or even an entrance lock. Quite often when fitting over the holes of an existing lock, the screw holes for the bolt and strike have been cross threaded or over-tightened leaving the holes unsuitable for new screws. For the Lockwood 005 deadbolt the screws thread in each time as they are not dependent on existing screw holes.

Inside locking knob

Inside locking knob Lockwood 005 deadlock fitted Locksmith BrisbaneThe inside of the Paradigm deadlock looks very similar to the inside knob of the Lockwood 001 deadlatch. In fact it works in much the same way, no surprise. It has a little window on the face of the knob that indicates whether the inside knob is in a deadlocked or undeadlocked mode. When the indicator is red, the inside knob is locked and can not be turned. This either indicated that the deadlock is deadlocked closed or locked open. When closed only the key can unlock the deadbolt from either the inside or outside. When the indicator is green, the deadbolt can be locked by turning the knob on the inside. Until the key is turned on the inside again, the deadlock operates the same way as a single cylinder deadlock, making it possible to open at any time from the inside.

Auto release deadlocking

When leaving the house you would usually deadlock the inside knob for security. If this lock is on your main entry door there is an added safety feature. Upon returning home and unlocking the Lockwood 005 from the outside, the inside handle is automatically released from its deadlocked position. This makes sure you are able to easily lock and unlock the deadlock from the inside with the internal knob.

Low Profile

Lockwood 005 deadlock low profile outside cylinder GoldThe external cylinder of this deadlock is partially recessed inside the door. This makes the outside profile much lower. In fact it has an outside profile of only 12mm, which is not only stylish but also makes attacking the lock much more difficult for burglars.

High security

The lock comes standard with Lockwood’s Kinetik Defence cylinders for added pick and bump key resistance. The cylinders can be changed to suit any Lockwood key making it possible to key alike all the locks on your home or business to the one key. A high security lock cylinder can also be used for extra protection against lock picking and key duplication.

Balanced steel bolt

The lock bolt is made from Stainless Steel and has saw resistant hardened inserts. As the bolt is shorter then most standard deadbolts, the Lockwood 005 is suitable to install where only a shorter bolt will work. If you have a glass panel next to your door strike, or just dont have the option of a large bolt hole, then the Lockwood 005 is a good choice. The lock bolt is adjustable to suit either a 60mm or 70mm door hole. This makes it an easy replacement for existing deadbolts, no matter what their backset is.

Our Brisbane locksmiths have plenty of stock in both Satin Chrome and Polished Brass and are able to fit this lock to your door at a time that is convenient to you. This is definitely a deadlock you will enjoy using.

Logan Central Nightmare

Logan Central Nightmare

Emergency Locksmith

Cheapest Price Locksmith cost more then bargained for!

Around midnight we were called to an apartment at Logan Central to unlock a door. It was a standard sounding type of locksmith job, so we thought.  We unlock a lot of doors!  Most of them are to help people get back inside when they accidentally lock their keys inside. This job was different!

When we arrive to unlock the door, our client informs us that their new deadlock was fitted earlier that day. They are quite frantic as their dog is locked inside the apartment and they have been trying to get the door open for the last 7 hours! They even tell me that they had another Logan locksmith out to open the door, but he left because he could not get the door open. The customer even has the keys to the lock, so at this stage this was not a normal every day door unlocking job.

The key works in the outside cylinder of the door. But the key will only turn a tiny amount in each direction which would indicate that there is a problem inside the lock. The lock that is fitted to the door is a Lockwood 001 Deadlatch. This type of lock has an outside cylinder that is connected to the inside lock mechanism via a long tail-piece and the cylinder is screwed to the inside of the lock with 2 screws. Maybe the cylinder is not lined up with the inside of the lock? Maybe the door has dropped and the latch is binding inside the strike? Nothing really makes sense with this lock.

The only way we can get this lock open is to remove the outside cylinder. This requires drilling the outside cylinder off the door. Not something we ever like to do! Our business is based on our locksmiths being able to open locks without damage. Unfortunately in this case there is no easy way to open the door. Drilling a Lockwood 001 Deadlatch is not an easy task! The cylinders are made from some pretty hard materials!

After the lock cylinder is removed first thing that is noticed is that the tail-piece is way too long. The tail-piece should be cut to a length to match the door thickness. Peering through the cylinder hole we can also to our amazement see that there is no tail-piece receptor in this lock! Maybe it fell out? This lock is very strange indeed!

A tool is made up to pull the bolt open through the cylinder hole. With the tool inserted a twist is all that is needed to open the door. The door swings open and the customer and their dog are reunited. They were so relieved to finally get back into their home.

The lock is then removed from the door for investigation of what went wrong. It was very obvious what the problem was with this door. The lock was fitted to the door but the actuator which withdraws the bolt when the outside key is turned was not fitted! The tail-piece of the cylinder was not even cut down. The small amount of movement we could feel with the key was due to the tail-piece of the outside cylinder jambing inside the inner workings of the lock. The piece that was missing from the lock is a large piece! The size of a golf ball! Not something that could be easily missed during installation.

The really disturbing part of this installation is that the lock was never tested from the outside! If the so called locksmith had have tested the lock with the key, then they would have realised that the lock was never going to work. It worked from the inside but as soon as the door closed, there was no way to get back in from the outside. How a tradesman could have not checked this is beyond me.

It turned out that the locksmith that had fitted the lock earlier that day was advertising the cheapest prices. It’s not the customers fault of course! They just saw someone advertising a $55 callout fee and thought it was a bargain. The locksmith was not a qualified locksmith. Judging by this job, I doubt they had ever done any kind of locksmith work before at all. I am just so happy that we could get the lock open, replaced and working properly. It saved these people from spending the night on the stairs outside their Logan Apartment.

Garage door security

Garage door lock. Old type of roller door

Old style garage door lock

Garage doors are often an overlooked part of the home security.

If the garage is not attached to the main house then it might not be thought of as a safety issue. Maybe the garage door lock should be more attention paid to it as the value of goods kept in the average garage can be quite high! If it is worth putting a lock on the door then it is probably worth making sure a burglar can not easily break into the garage.

Lockwood 001 deadlock

Lockwood Deadlatch

As a Brisbane locksmith we are often called to secure garage doors after a break and enter. Often the garage door is fitted with an inadequate lock which does not keep even then most novice thief from easily entering. An older garage in Brisbane often is fitted with a latch type lock which can be defeated with tools as simple as a credit card. One way of changing the locks and upgrading a door like this might be to fit a Lockwood 001 Deadlatch or a Deadbolt which will stop an easy door opening attempt. The type of door and door frame can dictate the best type of lock to be fitted in a specific situation. A garage such as a Titan Shed made from colourbond steel might need a specific lock type to suit a steel plate door such as a Lockwood 355 Deadlock.

The main door on a garage or shed should also be a concern. A lock that can be opened with a screwdriver or random key is not very secure. This is the type of lock people say only keep the honest people out. A true security lock with a brass cylinder is a much more secure lock and will be able to withstand a forced attack that most standard garage door locks will not. The keys for a number of standard locks are very insecure. Often times a Unit block of garages will be able to be opened with keys from other units. This is a good indication that the lock is very insecure and should be replaced.

Brisbane Locksmith quality L Handle lock in box

Brass Cylinder Garage Door Lock

There are a range of garage door locks available that take a more secure cylinder and have a much more solid lock design. Fitting a better lock to the door is an easy way to greatly upgrade garage security. A qualified locksmith can show if there are vulnerabilities in your garage or shed security. Leaving a garage insecure is really just leaving the security to chance. Personally I have found chance does not favor many people. Being prepared is always a better way to deal with your locks and security.

Keys and Lockwood Deadlock fitted to aluminium door

Lockwood Deadlock fitted to Anodised Aluminum door

Lockwood Security suits this West End Property

Colour Matching and style are not something locksmiths are greatly known for. I just wanted to post a photo of the lock we fitted to this West End home. The home has Black anodised bi-fold doors and the customer wanted a lock that was not going to stand out. Most locks for these doors come in a standard Satin Chrome finish or a Polished Brass style finish. Finding a black colour lock to suit doors like these is not always an easy task.

Matching the colour of a black door with a brown lock

Lockwood deadlock matched colour

Not sure if you can easily tell from these photos but the lock we fitted is actually brown in colour. These brown locks actually look very good on a black anodised or powder coated aluminum frame. The dark colour is a much better choice then a standard Chrome or Gold finish.

The lock we fitted to these doors is a Lockwood 355 deadlock. These are a high security deadlock that positively lock the deadlock and the strike together so they can not be pulled apart without first unlocking the lock. They are well suited to this particular type of bi-fold door and can be used on a sliding door or a swinging door as well. These doors were built in a way that they could only be opened and locked from inside the house. The Lockwood 355 deadlock allows the doors to be opened from both the inside and outside.

The double cylinder deadlock when fully deadlocked can only be opened with the keys. Even if a burglar breaks into the home, the door can not be opened. With out easy access, the burglars movements are restricted and he will not be able to carry items through the door. As other doors in the house also have deadlocks, it becomes a struggle for the burglar to work effectively.

Bi-fold door fitted with lockwood 355 deadlock for added security

Lockwood 355 Deadlock inside view

The Lockwood style keys are the most common type of key style in Australia. There are a large range of branded locks here that will work on the same key type. This makes it easy to have locks changed to all suit the same key. The lockwood locks also have the Kinetic Defence system which can make lock picking and lock bumping very difficult.

Different types of doors require different types of locks. If you consult a qualified locksmith then you should always be informed which locks will suit your particular door. On a door such as this bi-fold door a regular deadlock just could not be fitted. I am really happy this home owner had one of our qualified locksmiths install this lock. Fitting the wrong type of lock to this door would have been a real nightmare for the owners of the home.

Open your lock with smartphone

Finally a smart phone idea!!

Kwikset Kevo Bluetooth Deadlock Brisbane
Actually opening your doors with a smartphone is nothing new.  There has been a few problems with the idea though.  Some hotels have a smart phone option that you can use instead of a key or card to open the door.  Now there is a deadlock available from Kwikset with the same technology you can have on your house door that has all the same advantages.
The Kevo Deadlock from Kwikset works on Bluetooth and there is an app for smartphones which allows you to unlock the door simply by touching the lock.  You don’t even have to touch the phone.  Just keep the phone in your pocket.   You can also enable another person to have access to the lock with the app and even allow them temporary access to the door remotely.
The Kevo also has a traditional key lock that can be used to override the electronic part of the lock, so you are not totally reliant on your phone to open the door.  If something ever did go wrong with the electronics in the lock, the key can still be used for access.  There is also the possibility to disable the key completely and rely totatlly on the electronic lock.  If the security of a pin tumbler lock is an issue then disabling the key lock may be an option worth considering.
Having an app controlled lock also gives you the ability to change the combination or access to the lock very easily.  The user can easily change who has the ability to unlock the door.  This can be done instantly and there is no need to wait for a locksmith to come and change the lock.  This can be very convenient to a number of specific users who need this type of lock changing ability.
The Kevo also employs the Kwikset smartkey system.  This lock is bump proof and highly pick resistant.  It is also drill resistant, saw resistant and resists attacks from hammering.  The smartkey system can also be changed by the user with a special change key.  The smartkey locks can all be changed to the same key or any other kwikset smartkey key.  This makes the Kevo a very high security electronic lock for a residential home.
